Winner Announcement and Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #82

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Winner for April's Creative Nonfiction Contest

@nancybriti1, with the story:

The language of the forgotten

When the players took to the field, the euphoria in the stands began. I could see everyone's excitement, but especially my father's, and apparently he could see my excitement too, because every now and then he would turn to look at me with a smile and I would smile back. We didn't need to talk to know that we were happy. Our team was winning and that was enough for us to be happy.

Curator's comment :

nancybriti1 writes an eloquent CNF piece about a bond she shared with her father. Together they enjoyed watching baseball. This experience was not passive, but quite active, as the father would engage his daughter in the successes and failures of their favorite players. The story culminates in their attendance at a game, where one of their favorite players signals the young nancybriti1 to come over. She offers him her father's baseball cap to sign and the whole team joins in. It's a lovely piece.

Highlighting @phyna, with the story:

The Star Student, Pride, & Setbacks

Ugouchi wasn't like us. Yes, she was smart, spoke well, and looked nice with her pink lipstick and mascara. She had her own style, and we admired that. But she had this pride that she tried to hide with smiles and fancy words. That's what bothered us. Because, even though we were popular and smart, we never looked down on others.

Curator's comment :

phyna writes an interesting and very nicely written CNF, also on the theme of student rivalry. This one is very different, as she felt no jealousy of the rival at all. She just thought the girl was arrogant. Great story arc, with the arrogant rival experiencing a downfall and then feeling more humility, and more respect for others.

Highlighting @storygoddess, with the story:

Dreamy Stars

It seemed like the perfect moment to get up there deeper and for as long as I wished to stay. So, I travelled down the depth of my mind where a meeting was going on with my head.

Curator's comment :

Storygoddess delivers a gem of a CNF, which is packed with self-depreciating humor. It's really good for a laugh because she tells us about how she daydreamed about touching the stars. She tells us ** HOW ** she ** actually ** tried to touch the stars, lol! She tells us how she narrowly missed being run down on the freeway whilst trying to touch the stars. Brilliantly done!

Featured

Highlighting @zyzymena, with the story:

Finding my voice

"That's exactly why I chose you," She said, her smile warming further. She stood up from her desk and approached me. "You are a star that needs to shine, Faith. You have so much to offer, and it's time others saw that too. You will be representing your class. Okay?"

Curator's comment :

Zyzymena writes an inspiring creative nonfiction narrative about overcoming stage fright. The story is written in response to the 'Star' prompt. Zyzemana is chosen by her teacher to represent the class in a debate with someone from a higher class. After much encouragement from mother and teacher, Zyzymena finds the courage to deliver a great presentation. The author writes clearly and uses descriptive language which 'shows' us how she felt. There is a great arc in the piece.

This Week's Prompt 82:

"Add fuel to the fire"

Dictionary.com defines the idiom : Worsen an already bad situation, as by increasing anger, hostility, or passion, as in Bill was upset, and your making fun of his mishap just added fuel to the fire .

  • Perhaps a friend’s constant meddling added fuel to the fire in an already troubled relationship.
  • Maybe you let a secret out of the bag that caused a situation to blow up out of proportion.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.

I will participate more when people submit their entries

Hi @rare-gem. To clarify, we ask writers to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one they publish in The Ink Well. The stories you read do not have to be on the same prompt. Several new stories are published in The Ink Well daily, so there are plenty to choose from.

Oh thanks for this, I know better now. I will do justice to that.
