Taxtin County: The Quagmires of Spiro

in The Ink Well22 days ago (edited)

Dr Jones was a well respected Demon and Monster Hunter, but there comes a time when even the best cannot withstand the evils dwelling within this dark County.

As the sounds of his bullets whistled through the air, the smells of gun powder and bones wafted about. With a flurry of shots Dr Jones jumped through the air and threw two glass vases towards the rumbling ground. The glass smashed among the ever protruding bones whilst yellow and black smoke started twisting about, creating a vortex drawing up into the sky.

As he landed, he immediately drew a half circle in the sand in front of him, and shoved a large piece of bone shard into the ground before smearing it with a sticky black mixture he concocted earlier.

The ground before him rumbled as the soil started exploding, edging ever closer toward him.

Dr Jones pulled out his hunting knife and made yet another deep cut into the palm of his left hand.

Sticking his fist up into the air, he started shouting as the blood flowed down his arm and dripped into the soil from his elbow.
“Come forth, the beast within! Show yourself to me for I will set your spirit free! Your lust for blood will no longer be!”

The vortex spinning up in the background had created a deafening noise as the surrounding debris was being swept up, laying bare a monstrosity of bones, collected over the years for the beast to feed on.

Mangled bones started coming together, edging ever closer to the Doctor.

Some were fresh, others old and brittle, as it started taking shape. Dr Jones could see bits of flesh dangling about on what seemed to be shaping into legs.

Soon, the beast stood in all its might, towering over the Doctor, dwarfing him like a cat would a mouse.

It let out a deafening roar as bits of flesh and blood splattered all over the Doctor.

“You again,” growled the beast, as it lowered its head towards Dr Jones.

“I’m getting tired of you, old man,” he grumbled, as he smashed his mangled fist into the ground.

Dr Jones could hear bones cracking and scraping with every move.

‘You look different again,’ the Doctor thought to himself, as he slowly knelt down to grab the smeared bone in front of him.

“I can give you peace,” he shouted up at the beast.

“That insatiable hunger you have will be gone forever.”

Sweat was dripping from the Doctors forehead as he gripped the bone with both hands and chanted.

“Beast below, you be no more.”
“Beast below, you’ve seen before.”
“Beast below, your dying sin.”
“Beast below, forgiving then.”

Dr Jones’ eyes peeled back as the bone stuck into the ground started shaking vehemently. He held on with all his might and chanted again.

“Beast below, you be no more!”
“Beast below, you’ve seen before!”
“Beast below, your dying sin!”
“Beast below, forgiving then!”

The beast let out a deafening roar.

“You fool!” it spat at the Doctor, before taking a swipe at him.

The force shattered Dr Jones' shield he'd drawn in the sand, sending him tumbling back as he crashed into a rock.

Dazed, the Doctor could barely make out some of the beasts murmurings.

“…thousands of years…”
“Watching as you consume this land…”
“…yet you call me the beast…”

As darkness and silence started filling the Doctors eyes and ears, he heard one last thing.

“Don’t ever return!"

This is an interesting piece, one that draws the reader's interest as you masterfully script your words such that they give an absolute description of the events between Dr. Jones and the beast. Perhaps, Dr. Jones was the menace that had to be taken off the field of play.

Thank you so much for the kind comment 😊

As for Dr Jones being the menace, you seem to be heading in the right direction, but only time will tell. Let's see what happens in the next installment.

Alright, you're most welcome

Fantastic!

... will there be more?
