We sat at the open bar, near the live band, just as we had planned when we left the house. We had made a pact; "Tonight's girls' night out, no boys allowed in our tiny circle."
The plan was simple. Go to the local club, grab our drinks, sit near the live band, who were playing in front of the projector, watch the game, our teams were rivals, enjoy a few songs from the band, and then head home. The next day was Monday, a work day for me.
Luckily for us, we got seats at the front. I ordered a smirk of guarana, as she went for a smirk of black ice. Sip sip we did, as we watched the game, which my team lost at the end. Thirty minutes later, the live band took over. It was time for some Lingala.
Everything was going well, until the gentleman in front of us leaned in.
"Do you mind joining me?" he asked, his voice loud over the music, that even my friend heard.
She clutched my thigh. A reminder signal, we are to stick together, no boys allowed, not on this night. I understood the assignment and kindly declined the invite. "Maybe when we get to meet again," I said with a smile before I reverted my attention to the band again.
After a few plays, one of my favorite songs came along; "Sukari by Zuchu". It prompted me to stand and dance just where I was sitting, losing myself in rhythm. A guy from the dance floor, whispered in my ears, "Why don't you and your friend join us?" pointing at their table.
Funny, I didn't hesitate to tell him no. He was drunk, persistence, and somewhat annoying. I sat down, irritated.
"What does he want?" my friend asked.
"He wants us to go over to their table," I said, before adding with a shrug, "I said no."
"Good girl," she mocked.
Little did I know, I was dealing with a wolf in sheep's clothing!
The very same guy approached her. And, ghafla bin vuu! (all of a sudden or more like without second thoughts), she accepted the invite.
I couldn't believe my eyes! She was walking away. Just like that!
I felt the sharpness of betrayal's arrow as it pierced through my back all the way to my heart. My heart shattered, alongside my loyalty, as she walked off to their table.
I excused myself to the restroom, I had to go check my disbelief in the mirror. Ah! I was astonished, as I had been all along keeping loyal to a pact that she broke on the very first ask.
"Oh God! Am I such a fool?" I wondered to myself, as I splashed cold water on my face. "So, this is how loyalty is repaid, with betrayal at the very first chance!" My thoughts ran in chaos as I replayed the scene of watching her walk off with the guy, breaking our own pact of staying united and off boys for this particular night.
After five minutes of deep breaths and mental rewinds, I returned to "our" table. I stared blankly at the space between me and the live band, taking mental notes.
Then came the text; "Hey girl, c'mon, join us." I read the text message and rolled my eyes internally.
"Hmmm, I must be crazy to attend that table," I thought, smirking.
Still, I stood and walked over to where she sat. They made space for me, but the party mood had long left, the very instant she walked off. I handed her the jacket she'd left behind, checked the time, and looked her in the eye.
"Are you coming with me?"
"Why are you leaving so soon?" she asked, oblivious of the fact that I had to go to work the next day.
"I better get some sleep," I said, showing her the time.
She showed no remorse.
I didn't pretend to linger. With grace I carried myself, from their table towards the exit. Music faded behind me. There was no need to look over my shoulder, I knew she wouldn't be coming. At the gate I paused, inhaling the night's damp air. For a moment, as I closed my eyes, everything went silent.
I flagged down a motorbike and as I mounted it, I acknowledged that, I had not only left the club with betrayal in my pocket, but with a lesson stitched into my soul. Only I, alone, can be loyal to me.

Thank you❤️
Hhahah, some friends can be so annoying, you will plan something together but they will end up ruining it. That's why I always follow my heart😂
And the funniest thing is they won't care as long as they're the ones benefiting. Some beings though😂
You better keep following your heart dear, it's for the best! Thank you for reading through❤️
