En Caracas hay muchos lugares espectaculares, llenos de historia y arte, este es el caso de la iglesia de Santa Capilla, una iglesia espléndida y maravillosa. Tiene la apariencia de castillo de arena o de decorado de torta por esas agujas que se levantan al cielo buscando, quizás, la redención divina.
Venezuela no había nacido cuando el estilo gótico era tendencia en Europa, que apareció durante la edad media, pero eso no fue motivo para que no se hicieran obras que apuntaran a este modo de construcción, la diferencia es que deja de llamarse gótico, a pesar de ser la inspiración, y pasa a llamarse Neoclásico, que no es más que obras (sean obras arquitectónicas, pinturas o esculturas, con una clara inspiración o copia de otras grandes obras de siglos pasados.
Esto no quiere decir que las obras del neoclasicismo sean menos por querer expresar estilos antiguos, todo lo contrario. En el siglo XII era muy difícil crear construcciones muy altas, corría el año 1.100 DC los grandes castillos y fortalezas de esa época no podían permitirse la liviandad, porque carecía de elementos de refuerzo para estas grandes estructuras. Los antiguos arquitectos se dedicaron a estudiar, entre ensayo y error, para sentar las bases de este estilo inscrito dentro del arte gótico.
Las estructuras más antiguas, de estilo románico (como las que vemos en la serie House of Dragon) son altas, claro que si, pero a costa de grandes y pesadas bases, muros anchos que ayuden a soportar todo el peso del conjunto. El estilo gótico logró alcanzar el cielo (esto parece poco hoy en día, acostumbrados a rascacielos y puentes colgantes) pero era el objeto de estudio de los antiguos artesanos.
In Caracas there are many spectacular places, full of history and art, this is the case of the church of Santa Capilla, a splendid and wonderful church. It has the appearance of a sand castle or a cake decoration because of those needles that rise to the sky looking, perhaps, for divine redemption.
Venezuela was not born when the Gothic style was a trend in Europe, which appeared during the Middle Ages, but that was no reason not to make works that pointed to this mode of construction, the difference is that it is no longer called Gothic, despite being the inspiration, and is now called Neoclassical, which is nothing more than works (whether architectural works, paintings or sculptures, with a clear inspiration or copy of other great works of past centuries.
This does not mean that the works of neoclassicism are less for wanting to express ancient styles, on the contrary. In the twelfth century it was very difficult to create very tall buildings, it was the year 1100 AD the great castles and fortresses of that time could not afford the lightness, because it lacked reinforcement elements for these large structures. The ancient architects dedicated themselves to study, between trial and error, to lay the foundations of this style inscribed within Gothic art.
The oldest structures, of Romanesque style (such as those we see in the House of Dragon series) are tall, of course, but at the cost of large and heavy bases, wide walls to help support the weight of the whole. The Gothic style managed to reach the sky (this seems little today, accustomed to skyscrapers and suspension bridges) but it was the object of study of ancient craftsmen.

Todos estos secretos han sido descifrados hoy en día, pero para la época en que se construyó la Santa Capilla, muchos de estos eran difíciles de recrear solo por el simple hecho de no contar con las herramientas para levantar estructuras como esta, con la ayuda de ingenieros foráneos se levantaron muchas obras del neoclásico de inspiración francesa, ya que es los años de su construcción era la inspiración o Leitmotiv de los gobernantes de turno (léase Antonio Guzmán Blanco).
Esta iglesia tiene muchos elementos representativos del estilo gótico, los grandes vitrales, las altas bóvedas, los arcos puntiagudos, solo le faltan las gárgolas, aunque tiene a un demonio en su fachada que es la representación del mito de San Miguel arcángel derrotando al demonio. pues es precisamente este santo al que esta basílica le rinde homenaje. Los estilos arquitectónicos medievales no podían permitirse el lujo de tener grandes ventanales, porque estos no contribuían en nada a soportar el peso superior, así que este fue el gran avance de ingeniería de ésta época.
Solemos decir que la vida imita al arte, pero la realidad es que el arte imita a la vida, y no solo la vida, también el pensamiento y las grandes corrientes de investigación humana, es por esto que los grandes avances en la ciencia y en el arte son producto del cambio de mentalidad de las personas. Así vemos como en el medioevo el control de la iglesia que mantenía sobre los creyentes se obtenía mediante el terror al infierno, por eso las iglesias de esa época eran oscuras y tenebrosas y el único punto de luz caía sobre el sacerdote que daba la misa.

Thus we see how in the Middle Ages the control of the church over the believers was obtained through the terror of hell, that is why the churches of that time were dark and gloomy and the only point of light fell on the priest who gave the mass.

Entonces fue el cambio de mentalidad de los líderes eclesiásticos lo que impulsó todos los estudios que dieron pie a construcciones más altas, amplias y luminosas, para que la inspiración para lograr la afluencia de creyentes sería ahora la vida eterna, alcanzar la luz, y la gracia de los ángeles por sobre los demonios, cosa que le agradecemos profundamente. Este cambio de mentalidad fue también, el que llevó el arte hasta el Renacimiento, donde el hombre comenzó a ser la medida de todo y el fin último y más importante para el arte y la ciencia.
Esta basílica, en su hermosura, no es fiel representante de esta nueva mentalidad, más bien es un capricho de Antonio Guzmán Blanco; en Venezuela no pasamos por estos cambios históricos que marcaron a Europa, nosotros los importamos ya crecidos. Nuestra mentalidad es más caribe que flemática, es por eso que muchos no nos comprenden, somos producto del sincretismo y la mezcla, pero eso nos hace únicos e imborrables.
En Caracas existe otra iglesia de inspiración gótica, muy hermosa también, aunque más oscura y misteriosa que la Santa Capilla, está por los lados de la Plaza Concordia y es mucho más parecida al gótico tardío.

Our mentality is more Caribbean than phlegmatic, that is why many do not understand us, we are a product of syncretism and mixture, but that makes us unique and indelible.
In Caracas there is another church of gothic inspiration, also very beautiful, although darker and more mysterious than the Santa Capilla, it is on the side of the Plaza Concordia and is much more similar to the late gothic.

Es una gran arquitectura que admirar de Caracas; aunque todavia no tengo la oportunidad de ir por lo menos puedo ver estas fotos y sentir que estoy recorriendo esa iglesia.
La verdad es que esta iglesia siempre la encuentro cerrada, siempre me llamó la atención, pero nunca había podido entrar, de casualidad pasaba por allí la vi abierta y decidí conocerla de una vez por toda, así que todo ese asombro lo viví también por primera vez! Me contenta poder llevar esta belleza a nuevos ojos!
