Yes, Catalan did it during the Spanish civil war.
Submedia.TV has a film on Greeks that did it more recently, too.

It also briefly mentions the Spanish employee-owned-conglomerate Mondragon, which I believe you were referencing with your "Spanish Civil War" reference.
