Dragon War Decks are Making GU Fun Again!

I've been using a Light deck exclusively lately, and even invested a decent chunk of GODS into buying new cards for it, like Sern, The Moderator and Thestor, Grieving General, two legendary cards that really helped create some favorable situations for me throughout gameplay. But the recent surge in War decks taking the forefront led to me losing 9 matches in a row the other day and dropping well out of my Ethereal Diamond rank. So I thought, lets see what this is all about.

So I first tried an Olympian War deck, and failed miserably. I tried to make it work without some of the essential (and more expensive) cards for the Olympians, and that did not work out. But, I'd already gotten a fair share of dragons accumulated from the many Tides of Fate packs that I'd opened (from weekend rewards and also from tournament participation), so I thought, let's see what the hype is about...

And MAN OH MAN. This is a fun deck to play for one main reason: Draconite Shards.

Sheeeeesh y'all. Just try to get as many of these suckers as you can in a game and watch how much fun you can have. Each Draconite Shard allows you to delve a dragon, and there are some powerful beasts in there, let me tell ya!

Delving gives you three options, and let me show you a few of the options I've been given before:

Look at these 7 and 8 mana dragons! And often there are all legendaries in there, like in the first screenshot!

The reason why this is so awesome is because it means that as long as I can get to the point of having draconite shards available, I don't need to carry any higher mana creatures into battle. So that helps me maintain a lower mana deck and put pressure on my opponent from the start. My highest mana creatures only end up topping out at 5 mana.

So, the question is, how do I sustain until 7 or 8 mana in the game, so that I can use those big beasts, and how do I get more Draconite Shards? For the first one, again it’s all about getting my small ball guys out there as fast as possible to put some pressure on my opponent, so that I can stay in the driver’s seat till the 5-6 mana range of the game. And also because one of my 1 mana cards is the Scorchblade, which gives me a Draconite Shard when I play him if I have another dragon in my hand.

The 5-6 mana range is the toughest of the game often for me, but that’s when I push to deploy my Draka Gatherer as soon as possible, which gives me the potential to get an additional Draconite Shard…EVERY single turn. That is the money card that I need to get to every game, and can often lead to the win if it survives for a while.

And if we start accumulating the Draconite Shards and delving dragons, look out belowwwwww. CAUSE WE BREATHIN FIRE BABY!

Haha in all seriousness, I still lose games even with big dragons in hand, but at the very least, the game becomes super fun, because we’re deploying some big boys. Look at some of these game boards and hands I’ve accumulated all thanks to Draconite Shards and dragons:

(Check out all those 7 and 8 mana dragons ready to go!)

(Couple of 7 mana dragons ready and 3 more Draconite Shards to reveal still!)

All in all, it’s been super fun (especially when you get send out Legendary Ladon, Uclid Dragon with 8 cards in hand and he reduces the cost of all your other dragons to 0 mana.

This feature allowed me to launch the above attack in only one turn the other day, which was absolutely epic! Three 7 and 8 mana dragons on the board from only 8 total mana (because the other two dragons cost 0 mana after launching Ladon and his roar effect decreasing their cost).

To be totally honest, this is the most fun I’ve had playing Gods Unchained in a while. Here’s to hoping this Dragon War deck can last well into the future for a while!

What decks are y’all playing these days? And have y’all tried this Dragon War deck? Let me know!

Yep! It's fun to get a lot of random value cards to supplement your deck. Glad you're enjoying it!

100%! Totally agree. Reminds me of Erratic Portal in Magic Decks, where you sometimes would be able to delve a legendary!

its fun if you owned the new meta decks :P not so fun being the one getting rekt by them

Haha I got rekt too, trust me! Like I said in my post, I lost 9 matches in a row before I made the switch to finally let go of my Light deck, and I lost 7 of those 9 to these dragon and olympian War decks. They're tough!

o.o i thought your dragon deck was rekting people? dragon is so op now. i got lazy to play. might only play if i have feeling or sealed mode

Oh my, I thought Draconite Shard works the same as Tainted Trent. Three choices are very fun indeed.

Yup! Even better than just getting a random nature card, but I do like the tainted treat in the nature decks. Haven't used nature in ages though!
