Greetings everyone,
In my last post, I talked about using my first ever control nature deck and showed the results and the performance. So I kept playing this deck ever since, and I have improved a bit with it and got more familiar with it's gameplay. I understood why it is a little bit weak in some situations, but strong in others.
While playing the matches too, I went on and kept improving on the deck with some cards, and for specific reasons. So in this post I will be sharing the new improved version of it, as well as sharing my small experience about the matchups and why control nature is struggling at the moment! So without further ado, let's get into it!
The Deck
As you can see, I have not switched a lot of stuff of course, I just did 3 main switches, each of them has it's main purpose that I will be talking about. I improved the late game a little bit more, since the mid game is still decent as well as the early game if the good cards were acquired. Now let us talk about the changes.
New Changes
Blazing talisman for Faeflame blade
In my previous deck, I had 2 blazing talismans, so I switched 2 of them here for a faeflame Blade. Now you can keep it as it is for consistency, however, I added 1 Faeflame because I noticed it is very beneficial in clearing 1 health early game creatures without making your opponent not hit. Especially agaisnt light matchups for them not to build board!
Fir tree's fury for Helian Elite
My goal with this switch, is to improve my late game with this deck, because even though you have your Cruious Wisp which basically makes your late game splendid and unkillable from fatigue, these cards will help create so much pressure and make you reach later games for sure! It might even be enough to finish the game too!
Vinebound Jotun for Echophon, Atlantean Hydra
Thanks to our friend @kstreet advice, he pointed out that the deck need a 9 mana card and that will take it to another level and that was indeed true! Since this is a very late game deck, a 9 mana card can do so much. My only option here was Echophon since it's the best 9 mana card I own, however, Polyhymnia would be the best option here if owned since it is very annoying.
Canopy Barrage for Iron-tooth goblin
Having a relic removal at the moment is very crucial, and I suffered from it in the deck many times to I decided to add the Iron-tooth goblin! Now I was a bit confused on which card I should switch out, so I decided on canopy since I have decent early game clear. Barkswon Hunter is a decent switch choice too!
Why is control nature struggling
After playing this deck for a while, I noticed why the deck is currently struggling. This deck is the very late game type, the opoonent have full control over the match for the first 8 mana turns most of the time. And with the many early and mid game decks played now, it makes sense why it is struggling a lot!
Even for a control deck, for you to be able to survive, you have to have exactly the necessary cards at least for the first 5 mana or your opponent will snowball easily. It is really difficult to come back with this deck once your opponent is a little bit ahead and that what makes it strrggling currently.
To go more into details, let us talk about the matchups and how this deck does against them, or at least how I noticed myself doing:
Matchups
After playing a certain deck for a while, you get to this point where as soon as you know what your opponent is playing, you get this either YES feeling or the OH NO it;s doomed and this is due to how you usually do against them. So this is whaat I noticed with the control nature deck:
OH NO it's doomed matchups
Basically any OTK combo is a very win for the opponent in this matchup and that includes:
Rockdrake combo, School teacher, Divine Coronet (slightly easier), Arcane Burst, Dralamar combo.
Mainly all the matchups that I go OH NO it's doomed are OTK matchups, otherwise I would always have hope of winning! There is almost nothing you can do since you have the slowest deck on earth, the only thing I can hope to do is have Winter's Bounty and if we reached 6 mana somehow, which is highly unlikely, I would use to it to make my HP 40 and try to survive the combo!
The it can go either way matchups
These are the 50/50 matchups, or maybe the opponent has a slight edge since you would need exactly the good cards at the good time:
Aggro Light, Aggro War, Aggro nature, Card draw magic, Control nature, Control Light, Olypian light, and Zombie Death
Some of these matchups are a bot tougher than others, however, you would need the good card for the starting hand, as well as good clearing cards for the first at least 5-6 mana, and that what makes your opponent has the slight edge in this, here is an example of a decent starting hand:
Basically your goal here is to try and prevent your opponent from snowballing, that's why you need all the early game clearing tools! What makes it even tougher is you can easily fall off if your start getting late game cards at 4-5 mana!
Good matchups
Now here are basically almost every control matchups. I noticed that control nature is the king of control matchups if played correctly. You just have to use your resources properly and just get to the point where your opponent does not have anything to do anymore. Now bad draws can still ruin this, but it is way less likely than aggro matchups.
These matchups are more of chess match where you have the small advantage that you have to use to win:
Control Death, Control War, Control Magic.
THE YES matchup
Now the freest matchup of them all, is Hidden Rush deception. You have untargeted spells for eternity until you make your opponent cries. You can keep clearing as much as you want. It is very rare to lose this matchup with control nature! You just have to mulligan some good spells and clear the annoying creatures simply, here is a good starting hand:
On top of these cards, you have tons of others untargeted clearances, as well as a million healing!
Final Thoughts
I really had so much fun playing this deck, and that is why I kept at it and kept trying to make it better. It is a bit unique with it's way of usage, as well as the way of closing up and finishing the game. I hope these changes will be good for the future too as they have been doing well for me at the current moment!
Be sure to try them out of you are playing control nature and not using them, or go ahead and start using the deck if you haven't! It is important to switch it up from time to time and enjoy your time playing the game even if you're not using the best deck out there!
That was it for this one, I hope this was helpful in any way for anyone, I wanted to try and improve on this deck to try and make anyone who's playing control nature have a good success with it. Take care everyone and I will see you on the next one!
Mad Love, Peace out!
This is also true on my current deck, I have to have the right cards at 4-5 mana, or else, it will be hard to come back.
nice deck. This is more or less the same as me but I use the polyhymnia and probably a few more low mana cards to make up for that early game that you said you were struggling with
What other early game cards do you use?
oh its not that much of a difference. i use the jaguar and another canopy barrage so at least i have some board presence early to stop those war buff from popping off or light buff
I think I need an extra 2 mana card so I might go for it! Thanks!
you're welcome man just try it out if it works better keep it if it doesnt just use the same deck you posted
It looks like a good cheap version, have you defined a game with Echopon?
I ran against a bunch of aggro war decks this weekend and they were a real pain in the ass. I'm just now looking for alternatives to deal with them.
Aggro war has been somewhat winnable for me as long as I get a good starting hand. An underbrush board with some early game spells can easily get me to 6 mana. Barksworn is good too. If you don't have the underbrush try to mulligan a canopy instead and maybe a faeflame with a lightning strike. Once you get to 7 mana is pretty much your game!
So true 😁😁 When I think that Control Nature can become more popular, one more hair on my head turns gray. 😁
hahahahaha it won't become as popular unless a nerf came towards the top aggro decks.
I hope you are right. But look at Sambam's Control Nature deck - 76.5% win rate in Mythic. I am in Mythic at last, the second day, and hope to get some packs on WR... So, gods chained and unchained, please no Control Nature on my way 😁
Nice changes! Now your deck packs the punch it needs to seal the deal when you're able to stall to 9 mana. Very nice! I've just been playing with a control nature deck that runs 2x Dearly Departed and 2x Shines on Us All. Just won a game by obliterating Avatar of War and then Shining. Poor opponent was like, "WTF? I guess I'll die now."
I think this deck will also struggle with Olympian War. Shines is a critical tool against this olympian decks that just sit back and buff their whole hand. Even with those cards, I still lost. Olympian is just a really nice (and needed) counter to control.
