Madame Web - A Missed Opportunity

in Cent22 days ago

Did you catch the latest Marvel superhero film "Madame Web"? I must admit, it was a bit of a disappointment. As a fan of superhero movies, I always anticipate the release of new ones in order to see exciting plots and memorable characters. However, "Madame Web" failed to meet my expectations.

Cassandra Webb played by Dakota Johnson is the main character who has precognition powers because her mother got bitten by spider. At first the plot seemed interesting but sadly didn’t pan out. Furthermore, The birth of Peter Parker who later on turns into Spiderman could have been an amazing tie-in for example . But instead it felt forced and awkward.

One main issue I had with “Madame Web” was its writing. The screenplay lacked imagination and appeared to be trying too much to mimic something else. For instance, some lines here and there often made me cringe at their cheesiness. Take for instance a line where Cassandra says ‘“Hope the spiders were worth it Mum!”’ It did not possess that wit or sparkle that is required in any super hero movie.

The problem of male gaze was another thing that hit me. This movie was scripted by entirely men and it showed. The characters were off, the women were portrayed wrong and the narrative seemed to cater to more males than females. It was disheartening watching this in a female-led film.

Again, the pace of the movie disappointed me. Sometimes, it felt slow and tedious with never-ending scenes that hardly contributed anything to the story. On top of all this, action sequences which would have been thrilling were dull and grossly unoriginal. One could even go so far as to say that it appeared like an imitation of a superhero flick rather than a sincere effort at one.

Another issue I had with this film is that though Tahar Rahim played Ezekiel Sims, a villain in “L.a.”, he got much more my attention than the protagonist himself did; which is where this movie majorly fails since we should be on the side of good people not their opponents; one could infer from it that more time was spent on developing Ezekiel than his protagonist.

Then there was also just how the entire movie came off as outdated. It seemed like something straight out of early 2000s with its old fashioned storytelling methods and clichés. Even though advertising suggested otherwise about being a new perspective on superhero movies, it turned out to be an overused origin story arc that didn’t bring any novel thoughts into play.

Effort in its story and characters was also missed by the film. The creators appeared to have been just going through the motions and came up with a mediocre product without any real passion. As a result, I felt disconnected from the characters and had no interest in their journeys.

Also, director S.J Clarkson tried to foreground Spider-Man’s side characters but it didn’t work out. This movie fell flat and failed at capturing that magic displayed by some of the better Marvel movies. Bad dialogue, weightless action scenes. It seemed like this movie was trying to set up for many more movies but there were no paths leading it there or even guiding any possible direction.

Despite having great actors such as Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson, the performances were not well casted for this movie. Johnson’s performance as a reluctant superhero was alright but she did not do justice to her script or direction. This movie lacked humor, drama or exciting action that make superheroes enjoyable.

“Madame Web” overall left much to be desired from me while watching it as well as after watching it too: it seemed like one of those movies which could have introduced us into an interesting character within marvel universe but instead ended up being another addendum in multiple other average superhero films made recently; you might still want to see this flick if you love everything about Marvel but don’t expect anything new here.
