The Right Resource

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to appreciate how things go well when you find the right person for something.

The Right Resource

In a lot of things in life, it's all about getting to the right person!

There are so many things in life that are really fascinating and interesting mantras. One of the things you will hear people that aren't bullshit artists say is that "it's not about what you know, but who you know." and that for sure rings true in a lot of situations!

We've been helping my son catch up on his studies for several years now, trying many different things over that time. Some have worked better than others, but overall the kid is doing good he is for sure progressing. What helps his progression is finding the right tutors to help him along the way!

We've had our fair share of tutors at this point.. and can spot the good ones from the bad ones pretty quickly and easily. Thankfully, we found another good one in the harder side of it: math!

The guy is really a brilliant mathematician, though I don't want to say more specifics about him for privacy reasons on his side as well as ours, but he is smart as shit! He's got a very interesting and unique way to teach math to kids that are struggling, or need help catching up to get on the right grade level. An anecdotal quote we heard from another parent is in 7th grade he helped their daughter go from struggling with 2nd grade math, to doing trigonometry by the end of his working with her, about 5 or 6 months I think it was. That's a fantastic improvement and turnaround!

What I think is so important about him and his methods is that he, when I was watching him the first day we went there, was doing some fantastic foundational stuff with my son. He wasn't jumping right into the numbers themselves but was working on what he called math reflexes, which was actually brilliant and made so much sense.

Just like how we recognize the color red once we look at it, or the letter T if we see it, those are a different form of brain reflexes. It knows immediately what it is without having to think about it in the conscious end of the brain. It is processed near-instantly which is incredible. We can do that same thing with math with the right form and practice, which was great!

His breaking down of some of the methods and styles he was teaching my son, thankfully I could do what he said my son can do with more instruction, so apparently I had those instant reflexes with the various bits of math he was working on. Even still, there are always benefits with the parents engaging and doing these things as well! We can sharpen our skills and learn more, which is always important in the world today.

Granted I don't have as much time on my hands to do the active participation.. but I for sure try to do some parts of it as I can, such as the counting exercises that he gave us which helped him count in certain scenarios with him besides just 1, 2, 3 and 9, 8, 7 etc. so that was cool.

The funny thing about it is that we learned about this dude from a random, chance encounter my wife had last summer at a nail salon or hair salon or some shit. One woman changed so many things! Pretty awesome!

What about you, do you think that it's important to find the right resource for something, like schooling? Let me know in the comments!

Wow, that’s truly impressive! It sounds like he has a real gift for connecting with students and helping them unlock their potential in math. Turning such a huge gap into success in just a few months is remarkable!

I think the chance encounter shows having conversations in different settings can be a good way to gather information. I very much like his approach to teaching, starting with the foundation stuff is actually very crucial I think to have the right framework to understand any topic. I did read somewhere that learning subjects is similar to planting a seed, once the root is established, the tree can keep growing and every new information would find its way in the right order instead of jumbled up with no where to fit because the structure is not there.

I'm glad you found the right fit for him!
