Hoy, echando una ojeada a mi alrededor, sentado casi en el centro de mi estudio y sin tener en mente algo específico que hacer, mi vista tropezó con una pequeña escultura que hace poco recibí como obsequio especial de parte de Leo de Lázaro, a quien considero uno de los escultores más talentosos de estos tiempos en Cuba.
La pieza, como se muestra en el reportaje fotográfico del paso a paso, es una cabeza modelada en barro y después vaciada en yeso. Representa en pequeño formato la cabeza de José Martí, el héroe nacional de Cuba. Para mí, también está es una de las mejores interpretaciones que se han hecho de la figura inspiradora del "apóstol".
La imagen esculpida ya me ha inspirado en más de una obra, incluyendo una figura mural en una de las calles de la capital cubana, más precisamente en La Habana Vieja.
La visión accidental de esta pieza me despertó la motivación, y encontré a mano un bolígrafo de tinta negra y un retazo de cartulina para acuarela, así que me dispuse a trabajar al instante. Aunque todo el tiempo tuve el original delante de mí, bueno, más bien en ángulo, siempre tuve la intención de realizar un dibujo lo más libre y creativo posible. Es decir, no sería una copia mimética del original.
También ubiqué que la construcción sería con líneas sueltas y espontáneas, un método con el que también solucioné la cuestión del claroscuro y los volúmenes. Comencé, como es requerido, haciendo un trazado suave y casi imperceptible para bosquejar la forma de la cabeza con su atípica cabellera, que según el autor sugiere un Martí de fuego o en llamas. El fondo lo comencé de izquierda a derecha y, según iba entrecruzando líneas, también construía sugestiones e insinuaciones de figuras imprecisas y al azar.
El resultado: una interpretación surrealista del "Martí de fuego" de Leo de Lázaro.

Hello everyone in this sketchbook community.
Today, taking a look around me, sitting almost in the center of my studio and without having something specific to do in mind, my eye fell upon a small sculpture that I recently received as a special gift from Leo de Lázaro, whom I consider one of the most talented sculptors of these times in Cuba.
The piece, as shown in the step-by-step photo report, is a head modeled in clay and then cast in plaster. It represents in small format the head of José Martí, the national hero of Cuba. For me, this is also one of the best interpretations that have been made of the inspiring figure of the "apostle."
The sculpted image has already inspired me in more than one work, including a mural figure in one of the streets of the Cuban capital, more precisely in Old Havana.
The accidental vision of this piece awakened my motivation, and I found on hand a black ink pen and a piece of watercolor cardboard, so I got ready to work instantly. Although I had the original in front of me all the time, well, more like at an angle, I always had the intention of making a drawing that was as free and creative as possible. That is, it would not be a mimetic copy of the original.
I also determined that the construction would be with loose and spontaneous lines, a method with which I also solved the issue of chiaroscuro and volumes. I began, as required, making a soft and almost imperceptible outline to sketch the shape of the head with its atypical hair, which according to the author suggests a Martí of fire or in flames. I started the background from left to right and, as I crisscrossed lines, I also built suggestions and insinuations of imprecise and random figures
The result: a surreal interpretation of Leo de Lázaro's "Martí de fuego."
