Hello everyone! Today I am going to share the process of an artwork I did for fun yesterday. This is a character called Buttercup from the cartoon called The Power Puff Girls. I grew up watching this actually. There are three girls altogether and I picked Buttercup because I wanted to draw a grumpy looking girl. The medium I used for this artwork is colour pencils.

Usually I draw the outline using a pencil first but this time I was so excited that I drew it straight using a black gel pen, which means I can't do much to fix mistakes in the event I make any. I was in the mood of just going with the flow which is why I took this reckless decision. Reckless but harmless anyway so I guess it was worth the fun?

So, I realized something was off with the drawing and then realized that I drew the eyes wrong! UGHHH!!! I had a huge flash of regret cross my face and I was on the fence of making the decision on whether to continue the drawing or just give it up and move onto a fresh piece again. I was almost mad at myself for being so carefree, or rather careless.

To continue or not???

The mini title on top is was literally my mind voice at the moment. Well, I finished outlining the rest of the drawing in spite of the awful looking eyes I have her. Then, I tried to fix the eyes using a white gel pen, to no avail. I managed to make it lighter to an extent though.

Next, I just told myself, "To hell with it" and went ahead with the colouring. I had a tiny chunk of hope that I can fix the eyes using colours as I go. I coloured the skin first to give some life to the girl.

I know cartoons are generally 2D but I still wanted some 3D effect which is why I thought of added another colour and a little bit of a gradient effect for every part of the artwork so I added another colour to the skin.

Buttercup is the green girl so I coloured her eyes and dress in green.

I coloured her eye in purple.

To make it droopier and more restless, I added a darker shade of purple.

I coloured the background in pink because it is the colour that appears in the wording theme of the cartoon in the beginning.

I added a lighter shade of pink so pink wont dominate the rest of the artwork.

It was very difficult to choose a proper blanked colour for her. She usually uses green but I thought there will be too much green so I mixed a bunch of colours.

That is my colour set by the way.

Done with the blanket.

So I thought the purple and yellow go along with the rest of the colours and brighten up the artwork.

The hair was tricky. I didn't want it to be completely black as that will overshadow all the other colours so I mixed some brown in.

There she is. My little grumpy looking Buttercup!

This is the cropped version. She just woke up from sleep and is already grumpy. This is how exactly I wake up as well when I pull off an all-nighter the previous day. I do know it is bad but sometimes I binge game or binge read. Depending on what I did, sometimes I wake up happy despite being sleep deprived :D
