The unfortunate prank- fiction-short story

Danny woke up startled. He had a gigantic headache and opened his eyes
slowly. Despite the sun peaking in through the curtains it was completely dark
in his apartment. It was the first day of his long-awaited holiday and he went
out for drinks with his work-friends to celebrate. They obviously went
completely overboard, and he had way too much to drink.

Danny lay with closed eyes thinking about the previous night. He had no idea
how he got home in one piece. His friends must have put him in a cab.

He tried to lift his head to switch on the bedside lamp, but he couldn’t
move. His head felt too heavy, and he felt awfully sorry for himself. He might
as well just turn around and sleep again. With great difficulty he turned
himself away from the window, but as soon as he turned, he had the shock of his
life.

There was a girl in his bed. He had absolutely NO idea who she was, and he
has never ever had a one-night stand before. He held his breath and knew that
he had to get out of bed immediately.

What has he done? This was not his style and although he was not currently in
a relationship, he felt cheap and guilty.

Nobody was going to believe him when he told this story.

” There we go Danny; you even surprise yourself with the stupid things
you do!”

He forced himself to sit up straight. With great difficulty he switched on
the night light. The girl stirred and he quickly switched it off again.

She was a beautiful girl, but he had no idea what her name was, and it felt very
awkward.

She was in his apartment so how was he going to get her out of there?

Danny started to panic. Perhaps he just needed to be straight forward and
ask her to leave, but that would seem very rude.

Perhaps if he made some coffee she would wake up and then she could just
leave. He decided on the latter.

He felt ashamed when he pulled on his shorts to go to the kitchen. When he
finally got back to his room, he was startled to see the that the girl was
gone. He then heard her in the bathroom and that made it feel even more
awkward.

He put the coffee on the bedside table and took a seat on the bed. When she
finally emerged from the bathroom, she looked radiant.

“Good morning darling” she said smiling, and he nearly dropped the steaming
hot coffee in his lap.

“I can’t believe we got married last night.”

Danny’s courage sank to the floor.  Here he was, still half-drunk and he had absolutely no idea what to call her. He was completely stunned, and of all the stupid things he had done in his life this was by far at the top of his list.

He just sat there and shook his head.

“Don’t tell me you cannot remember what we did last night?” the girl
said and looked a bit annoyed. Danny sighed.

“To be honest, I don’t. Last night is a total blank and I can’t remember
a thing. I’m sure we can sort this out like adults.”

“Well, we had some great adult fun last night!” the girl said and
took a sip of her coffee as if it was the obvious thing to do.

“I’m Julia by the way. In case you forgot my name too.”

Danny felt ashamed but let out a weak smile. He couldn’t even look into her
eyes.

“I have no recollection of anything that happened last night.”

She told him the whole story and he felt even more ashamed.

He sat in silence for a second and felt very annoyed with his so-called
friends. He couldn’t believe that Peter would allow him to do this.  He was in a desperate situation and would give
everything if the earth could just swallow him now.

“I’m sorry. I really feel terrible, and I didn’t mean for any of this to
happen.”

Julia burst out laughing. She couldn’t stand it anymore and she had to tell
him the truth.

“Geez, you look like you have the whole world on your shoulders right
now. I’m Julia, Peter’s sister.  Don’t worry, we were just playing a prank on you. We didn’t sleep together, and we didn’t get married. Peter dared me to get into bed with you this morning. He is still sleeping in your spare room. We were all out last night and he didn’t want you to come home alone in the condition you were in.”

Danny blushed and then smiled. He felt as if he could breathe for the first
time that day. It still felt awkward but now that he knew nothing happened
between them, he felt more at ease.

He knew that he would get back Peter sooner or later as they always played
pranks on each other.

“Would you like to go out to dinner tonight?” Danny asked Julia and
she smiled.

"Oh, my husband dearest, I would love to go out to dinner with you.”

Danny smiled. Perhaps this was the best prank that anyone has ever been
played on him, and he could feel that this was the beginning of something
special.

What started off as a silly prank might not have been so silly after all.
