An outdoor studio shoot with Justin the zebra jumping spider.

in OCD4 years ago

Hey all,

I have been trying to find a wild jumping spider for weeks and weeks and finally tonight I found one on one of our pot plants. These guys are tiny and move really quickly, and of course, they jump about. Jumping spiders are awesome, if I could have a pet one then I would, but the other half is petrified of anything with 8 legs so it's a no-go. They don't make webs to catch their prey, they attack them. Kind of like the Spanish inquisition...

Our chief weapon is surprise... surprise and fear... fear and surprise... our two weapons are fear and surprise... and ruthless efficiency... Our three weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...

Before jumping they will attach a silk thread to the surface they are on as a bungee in case they fall off. At one point, this little guy who was no larger than 5mm jumped about 6 inches.

Anyway, once I found him, I put him in a little pot while I set up my black acrylic sheet outside on the patio table. Let him run around a bit on there and got some shots. They are tricky to shoot as they tend to run away from the big white diffuser but there's a few I'm happy with which I'm sharing here. Hope you like them.

The bottom close up with the reflection is just great, now that is a shot to scare people that do not like spiders.

Can't believe people would be scared of these guys. 5mm in size and super cute if you ask me. They have amazing personalities too.

Beautiful shots

Cheers Wes, enjoyed your recent ones too.

This is such a cutie! I would totally want one as a pet, but I think they are better off in nature. Love the reflection and the idea! Making spiders look cute is a great initiative! Keep it up!

Thanks. There is something about the eyes on these little jumping spiders that makes them come across as cute. They arent so cute to the little fly that happens to be a few inches away though :D

The eyes oh yes! So round and a perfect size in comparison with the proportion of their body! Would love to see more photo sessions like this, keep it up!

Uhhlallaaaa, creepy stuff lol Nice shots though.

Cheers. I think they are cuter than some of your models to be honest ;)

Omg, for real? That must have been a self portrait then lol

What a magical world we live in :) Awesome work. Wonderfully composed and lighted image. congrats !I offer appreciation and love.

Thanks, much appreciated

They are really great shots...Using the light is wonderful. How scared it looks...Wonderful pictures...
