Hive Ain’t Goin’ Mainstream Till We Stop Hiding in the Basement

Alright look, I’m not here to be polite.

I’ve been on Hive since before it was even Hive. Back when it was Steem, and your upvote was worth half a bag of chips.
I’m still here. I found my old keys. And I’m staring at this platform thinking:

"Why the hell don’t more people know about this?"

We’ve got real users, real content, actual rewards, zero gas fees, no censorship, and a blockchain that just works.

And yet... no one’s heard of us.

So let’s cut through the fluff and talk about what Hive actually needs to do marketing-wise if we ever want to get out of our little Web3 attic and walk into the real world.

1. We Need to Tell a Story. Not Just Shill Features

Hive people love talking about:

  • 3-second transactions
  • Feeless operations
  • Decentralized governance
  • Native rewards system

Cool. But no normie cares.

We need stories:

  • "I paid rent from my blog posts on Hive."
  • "I got kicked off Facebook and found freedom on Hive."
  • "Hive taught me crypto better than any YouTuber ever did."

People follow people, not protocols.

Until we start telling human stories with emotion, pain, and power…we’re just another whitepaper with a wallet.

2. We Need Faces. Not Just Frontends

Hive is like five platforms wearing sunglasses indoors:

  • PeakD
  • Ecency
  • Hive.blog
  • LeoFinance
  • D.Buzz

That’s cool, but who do I follow?

Where are the creators? The faces? The voices?
We don’t need another interface, we need characters.

Give me a Hive MrBeast. A Hive crypto grandma. A Hive rapper dropping weekly bars on-chain. A Hive couple who turned blogging into a side hustle.

Right now, we look like an empty mall with too many entrances and no food court.

3. Somebody’s Gotta Spend Some Damn Money

Look, I love that Hive didn’t take VC money. We’re pure. We’re clean. But at some point...

"Decentralized" doesn’t mean "nobody buys ads."

Where’s the campaign?

  • Google Search ads for "how to earn crypto blogging"
  • YouTube interviews with Hive creators
  • Memes and reels pushed on IG and TikTok
  • Podcast tours
  • Twitter/X bangers that slap

Even if we crowdfund it Hive needs a face and a funnel.

Right now, it’s like trying to sell fire without smoke.

4. Educate Without Sounding Like Blockchain Nerds

Hive should be the place where:

  • New creators learn how Web3 content works
  • Web2 influencers escape platform jail
  • Reddit refugees find a new tribe

But instead, our onboarding says:

"Please generate a posting key, memorize this 62-digit password, then understand RC credits and vote decay."

Bruh.

We need onboarding that says:

"Step 1: Write something. Step 2: Post it. Step 3: Earn something."

Leave the nerd stuff for later. Nobody learns how the carburetor works before they drive the car.

5. Reuse Our Best Content Off-Chain

Some of y’all write fire content...and then let it sit on-chain like a mixtape in a box.

Take your Hive post, screenshot the best quote, and tweet it.
Turn your story into a LinkedIn thread. Turn your how-to guide into a TikTok.
Mention Hive once, just enough to make them curious.

Pull people in. Don’t expect them to already be here.

6. We Need a Unifying Message

What does Hive stand for? Freedom? Ownership? Real content?
Let’s pick a lane and go hard.

Right now we’re kinda:

  • "Come to Hive, it’s everything!"
  • "It’s Reddit, but also Twitter, and Medium, and a game!"
  • "We have NFTs, but not those NFTs!"
  • "You can do anything, but please don’t ask how!"

We sound like a confused buffet. We need to sound like a movement.

Give people a reason to join that isn’t about money.
Then let the money surprise them after they fall in love with the mission.

Final Word

Hive is crazy powerful.
The tech is fast. The people are real. The platform already works.

But if we want the world to notice, we gotta stop acting like a secret club in a bunker and start acting like a revolution.

So here’s my ask:

Let’s stop hiding. Let’s start showing.
Let’s build a platform worth screaming about, and then scream about it.

Feel me?

Let me know in the comments how you’d market Hive if it was up to you.
We’re all marketers now.

Reblog if you believe in Hive. Comment if you're tired of the silence. Let's make this thing loud again.

Sort:

I couldn't agree more. I know that the VSC team is working on support for Web2 social logins (Gmail, Discord, etc.) which will help onboard new users.

I think that getting key voices who understand decentralization would also help move the platform. Early adopters of Mastodon, Bluesky. Those who have an existing audience and can easily communicate the benefits out to the world.

Otherwise I would honestly downplay the features of Hive as a platform. Facebook has games, we have games. But the games are not our identity, the social interactions are. Hive needs to commit to being a Web3 Social Media network first, and a Blockchain/crypto platform second.

Absolutely agree with all of that.

The social login update from VSC is a huge step, once new users can just sign in with Gmail or Discord instead of juggling 5 keys, we might actually keep more than 10% of them. That’s been a silent killer for onboarding for years.

And yeah, bringing in the Mastodon / Bluesky crowd makes a ton of sense. They’re already decentralization-pilled, just need to see Hive as more than “Reddit with crypto.” If even one of those early influencers migrated here and brought their audience, it could snowball fast.

And I really like your last point. Hive needs to stop acting like an app store and lean into what makes us different: ownership, community, and sovereignty in content. Games, NFTs, DeFi, those are cool side quests, but the core identity has always been social.

Let’s build around that and stop trying to be everything at once. Appreciate your comment fr.

There is a lot of advertising happening through the Q3 Value Plan Proposal.

You don’t need stories, that sounds like a scam. I got banned from subs just by mentioning this place to people trying to find ways to earn some extra cash from their online activity, no shilling, no shady links.

People should stay because they have fun on the dapps built on top of Hive, not because they earn money, so dapps need to find ways to be engaging and Hive price will just follow.

X/Instagram are engaging, not the internet protocol.

Honestly I think that with time everything will work itself out. The only question is how much time. We also have to compete with traditional social media platforms making it easier for people to earn. Look how streaming took off in the past couple years. It’s just a matter of time!!!

Ironically, some web 2 companies could just hoard some HIVE at these prices without anyone noticing and at some point announce they are going to integrate their apps on the Hive blockchain. The value of those coins would pump insanely high overnight and give those companies a huge profit.

there's a few of us doing this brother... i like this attitude

That’s dope to hear!!!! If you could reply with some of their @‘s so I can make sure to follow them. Thanks for the reply and taking the time to read my post!

Also I believe I remember your name from the Steem days.

I had an idea for how to advertise. Create a proposal via the Decentralized Hive Fund that people can vote to provide funding for. I'm sure there is some way that a bot could then use that HIVE to purchase Google Ad space (or any other advertising network). The bot would buy exactly as much advertising space as it has funding for.

I may look into implementing this, but it would require me to learn a whole new set of technical skills. If someone beats me to it, more power to them.

Maybe not though:

Thanks for sending me this video. I just watched it and this would not pertain to you. at all. If you did what you said in the previous comment I don't see you breaking any laws. All you would be doing is promoting a social media website. I actually watched the whole video and I had never heard of him before. Sucks that he had to time for something so trivial. I actually had already thought about creating some type of proposal that could actually help spread the hive movement. To be honest I don't really think the big accounts want Hive to blow up. I could be wrong but it seems like that is the case. Hive is so unique and different than any other crypto that it really boggles my mind that it isn't more mainstream. I'm also a big conspiracy nut so go figure lol.

If anything, the big accounts have a vested interest in Hive blowing up. The value of Hive as a cryptocurrency will increase with it's demand. I know a lot of them are not selling right now, so maybe I'm wrong, but basic supply and demand should still roughly apply.

That said, selling Hive means less platform control, so maybe that's what they want to keep. Who knows 🤷‍♀️.

There's no point in this kind of marketing, we need a dapp that people use, have fun and stick with it for hours daily.

People shouldn't even care about HIVE and its price as a token.

great to have you back
you seem like you've got some great ideas + creative content and enthusiasm
you're exactly the sort of face we need
be the change. lead the way
