Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center

in OCD3 years ago

One of the largest projects ever around Athens and among the greenest ones globally is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center located South of the city one breath away from the sea. You can retrieve any info you want from their site (linking text doesn't work for me lately on peakd so here it is: https://www.snf.org/en/initiatives/snfcc/ ) and it's important enough to deserve a book but I'll just share with you only the facts that I'm familiar with and impressed me the most.

I didn't say "greenest" without a reason. When the project was a construction site with 10 huge cranes working simultaneously I had no idea how much weight they intended to put on its efficiency. Later I had to do isolation works on the roof top of my house and as I was talking about it with the constructor who was doing my roof he told me "we're also involved in this and it is by far they most efficient construction we have ever seen so far". Today it is recognised as one of the world’s most sustainable building complexes of its size. In November 2016, the SNFCC got the Platinum Leed certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for both innovative architecture and green technology and that's a top award for a construction on that matter.

There's not a single spot in its interior where you feel cramped neither one that feels empty keeping a great balance in all spaces, some of them often hosting art exhibitions.

It's got a vast area of gardens planted with local trees and herbs. In the middle of them is my favourite green area which acts as an open air cinema during summer:

Summer in Athens can be hot, they have taken care of that too:

The picture can't tell but even these lovely chairs painted in olive green are very comfy:

Necklace is not mine :)

This is how the main building looks like down from the gardens:

As you can imagine located on that peak and being that high it offers wonderful overview from it's top floor where you can have a drink as well:

Here's a few images from the cafe area which also hosts art exhibitions:

If this still doesn't impress you enough it definitely soon will combined with the renovation of the seaside area that is taking place at the moment (a huge project including an underground avenue), hopefully finished in the near future. I'll review and post it when it will be over.

Till then, take care!
