Playing around with my 500mm

in OCD2 years ago

Damn, feeling much better than the last time when I posted here. Caught the stomach flu (gastroenteritis), and how about we don't Google that, alright? Thanks. It got me good though... so good, every inch of my body started to hurt as I tried to move around. The idea that all my bones moved around while hugging the toilet... bruh... it had me all teary 'n shit. I'm not even joking, maybe joking aside from being serious as well.

Anyways; the reason why I started posting: let's get back on topic: Playing around with my 500mm Rokinon Mirror lens is so much fun.

With 500mm, you can pull stuff closer to you from far away. I love the old-school vibe it provides due to its "lower quality" tier of glass. It's a mirror lens after all. This means that the lens is using mirrors to increase its focal length/zoom, which is an optical illusion. You'd be stunned how far you can see.

I remember getting this lens for free when I picked up my Canon 5D Mark II in the US. For a long time, I didn't use this lens because I thought it was garbage. But over the years, I started to love it more and more. Guess it might have something to do since I'm aging as well. The real challenge of this lens comes with its manual focusing. There is no auto-focus (which I barely use if I have the option), this isn't a real problem or challenge, but because of the 500mm, you'd need a steady hand to be able to photograph without movement in your photographs. To give you an idea: 500mm * 2.2 = a shutter speed of 1/1100. That's what you would need to shoot with to prevent movement in the image (that's super fast if you couldn't tell already by the number xD).

These are a couple of macro-photographs that I took of a tiny plant/flower (I don't know wtf it is) just in the living room (I believe lackofcolor calls it Buskruit? Gipskruit!).

Even though I'm getting old, I shot them all in 1/1000 #HandFlex XD.
Hope you enjoyed these images :)

Cheers.
Ruben

500mm?? That's crazy! Isn't that what most wildlife photographers use or is it a different one? I can imagine the shakey and the hassle of manually focusing it lol

Yeah, it's a different one (I think it's a really cheap one, but it came with the package deal so I don't know :P) than wildlife photographers use, but it does have the same logic being shaky. Manually focusing is much more of a hassle with the tiny focus gap it has, but the bokeh is quite unique if you ask me.
