PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

This is a strange feeling that naturally occurs after an experience with frightening/disturbing situations. This is normally accompanied by a natural anxiety when the disturbing situation reoccurs or the victim finds him/herself alone or in a situation that triggers such fright.

People who often experience PTSD can not be regarded as SICK, it can happen to anyone. In most cases, it affects Military men during active service in their sleep or after retirement. Other victims who suffer from this distressful activities can be from sexual abuse, physical abuse, accident, war or other forms of violence.

Symptoms are sometimes lack of sleep (insomnia), moodiness and avoiding large crowd. It may last for years but here are ways to manage it.

  • Avoid taking alcohol - alcohol helps to forget the current situation but when the effect wears off, you'll realize you're alone, flashbacks will come, hitting you harder this time. I would suggest a beverage of your choice daily. I love taking water, you might as well take plenty of it but in moderation. Water is no one's enemy.
  • Increased daily meditation - this can be a yoga exercise or any form of relaxing exercise whichever one you deem fit and easy. Meditation helps alot to rediscover oneself.
  • Engage in physical activities - such as Track racing, cycling, jogging, swimming etc. These activities help keep your mind and body intact. I saw a video of an athlete suffering from PTSD engage in her routine exercise and she confirmed it works. So, it's a plus.

  • Engage in Social media challange- currently we have so many dance challenge using Tik Tok application or Thriller. All these activities help reliefs stress, to see the brighter side of life, you may as well put up a challenge and see people fall en mass especially with the lockdown situation, trust me, "people gon jump on it".

  • Do not be afraid to speak to people (preferably friends, family or a psychologist), about how you feel. Talking out of free mind atimes help relief stress and burden attached to ourselves.
  • Get a pet - A dog or cat are cool human friends, the chemistry between us is so powerful that it understand the chemical reaction of both parties. If you stay alone, this pet(s) will definitely be your good company.

REMEMBER, PTSD is life threatening, if not well attended to, it may change the shape of one's life forever.
