Hello everyone, hope we're still social distancing and keeping safe. Yesterday my neighbor called me to request for two face masks since she had run out of the surgical ones she'd been using and it was quite expensive. She didn't have any fabric so I checked my pile of leftover fabric and found some pieces of ankara to work with.
Here's how I made them
- First, I cut out a circle of 26cm diameter on a pattern paper.
- The circle was folded in half.
- It was folded again to form a cone.
- I then placed the pattern paper on the fabric and cut it out. Four pieces of the pattern are needed.
- I marked 12cm on one side of the cone, 8cm on the other and made a curve using a French curve but you can use any curved item or freehand.
- The smaller part of the curve was then cut off. I joined two pieces together along the curved edges. Did same for the remaining two pieces.
- I then placed one piece on the other, right side facing each other and sewed along the edges leaving an opening to turn inside out.
- Once turned inside out, I made a space for the elastic or rope to pass through on both ends.
- Using a loop, I passed the rope through on both ends.
My DIY mask is ready at zero cost. I made the second one in a different print using the same pattern as the first. I handed them to my neighbor and she loved them. She was also surpised to get them within minutes of request.
