As inhabitants of today's world, we are prompted to reflect on our conceptions of values, even more so as the Latinos that we are. It is good to remember that the transmission of values is not obtained through theoretical contents, but in the personal communication of those who live them and translate them into vital experience, creating at the same time a climate of respect to those values that constitute the human being as a person.
Hence, it is necessary to create the proper environment to educate in values, to create the capacity to perceive them, to discern about them, to be creative to express them and to be committed to live them.
For the above mentioned, it refers us to ask ourselves a question
WHAT ARE VALUES?
In simple words we can say that they are the fundamental "axes" by which human life is oriented and constitute the key to human conduct.
In the perspective of every human attitude there is something that gives meaning to the personal and social conduct of the individual and explains the cultural development of societies. No education is possible without the judgment of values and the behavior to be assumed in the face of any action.
However, we can qualify the functions performed by values in the following statements:
1.- They serve to guide the life of man.
2.- They guide the actions of the individual in concrete situations of life.
They act in the perception that we form of others and of ourselves.
4.- They are valid for judging and being judged.
Following the same order of ideas, we can say that with all the functions we form a system of values, which comes to act as a general plan of support and help to evaluate, resolve conflicts, and make decisions, as well as to maintain and exalt self-esteem, since, the values reveal the idea of man and the knowledge that he should have of himself.
We live in a society where values are in an abyss, life is only measured and calibrated in terms of utility, interest and convenience; therefore it is important to recover the moral conscience, the personal identity, which avoids the manipulation of our existence.
The first thing is to start from the reality in which we live, one and all, without prejudice, as a sure foundation for action, to take men, women, adolescents and children of today, from what they are to what they should be, from a reality, so often limited, to a more valuable situation, to a life of higher quality.
In short, the subject becomes a person when he acts as an individual in society, prepared to develop within the environment of his peers and non-peers, capable of giving others the best of himself.
