Childhood has a lot of memories that I can’t forget, and tales is one of those memories that made my childhood so fun. Even now that I am an adult, I always wish I could draw back the hand of time when my granny would gather us on the big mango tree in front of our house to tell us stories once the moonlight set. Once evening is drawing near, I will do whatever chores I have to do on time so that I will not miss Granny's tales. One of my favourite tales is the story of the tortoise and the elephant. The story has a lot of lessons.

Once upon a time in a kingdom, the princess rejected every suitor that came her way, both noblemen and low-class people. One day the king, who is the father of the princess, called her, the queen and the other children and questioned her why she keeps rejecting every suitor that comes her way. He sent the siblings and the queen to help him and ask the princess what her problem is.

After the discussion, the princess opened up to the family that whoever marries her will come with an elephant. Her reason for demanding an elephant is because if there is an occasion in their kingdom, she will climb on top of the elephant so that everyone will know that she is a princess.

As they were saying all this, the tortoise went to the king seeking the princess's hand in marriage, but the king commanded his guards to take the tortoise out of the palace. The tortoise and the elephant are very good friends; the tortoise went to visit the elephant, telling him that there will be a great festival in the palace. We know how cunning and greedy the tortoise can be.

The elephant has no idea that the king has declared that whoever brings the elephant will marry the princess. So the tortoise told the elephant that the king instructed him to tell him that he, the elephant, will be the chairman of the occasion.

The elephant asked the tortoise to repeat what he said again. The tortoise repeated the same thing: he told him that the king said, 'You will be the chairman of the occasion, and the king says you should make sure you attend the occasion.' The elephant was very happy because it has always been his wish to visit the palace to know if he can marry the princess.

After the discussion between the elephant and the tortoise, the clever tortoise left the elephant's house and went straight to the palace to inform the king of the day he will come and marry the princess. The king asked the tortoise if he could meet the criteria to marry the princess. With comfort, the tortoise told the king he should not mention it until that faithful day.

On that fateful day the tortoise went to the elephant's house. He didn’t go on time, and when the elephant saw him coming, the elephant questioned the tortoise why he came late, knowing fully well that he is the chairman of the occasion and he is not meant to be late for the occasion. The tortoise calmed the elephant down, promising him that he will walk fast.

The elephant and the tortoise embark on the journey. The elephant told the tortoise to walk fast before the ceremony ends. The tortoise told the elephant that he knows that he walks faster than him, but the only thing is to slow down for him. The elephant told the tortoise that he will not wait for him, but the tortoise begged the elephant to carry him on his back.

The tortoise tries to climb the back of the elephant, but he can’t. He begs the elephant to grant him access to use the rope in his hand to tie on his neck so that he can be able to climb his back. The innocent elephant tells the tortoise that whatever he is doing, he should be fast; there is no time. The tortoise uses the rope and ties the elephant's neck and climbs on the elephant's back. As they get closer to the palace, the tortoise raises his voice, saying, 'My king, here is the elephant.' The elephant was so surprised and asked the tortoise, 'Who did you say you brought to the palace?' The tortoise knew that he only said that the earth should guard and protect the elephant, not that he had brought the elephant to the king.

As the tortoise got to the palace, he handed over the robe in his hand and said, 'This is the princess's demand.'

Moral lesson.

Be careful of people you call your friend.

Be very careful when escorting a friend on an errand.

Don’t trust anyone.

Always be determined when pushing your goals, just like the tortoise; he was so determined to marry the princess, and he did.
