One of our greatest motivating forces to keep us going is faith. Faith is the unseen power of life that sweetens the day, and the hidden power through which we meet life's problems and live even when it seems that no hope is left. In my own life, many times have I lived because of this simple but essential factor.
And only God knows how many times faith has kept me balanced when all else has failed. We forget sometimes how many things in life are built upon faith. We arise from a sleep having no idea of what the day will bring. But we arise, we dress, we go forward. We love although we have been hurt. We begin again after we have fallen.
We pray although the answer is delayed. This is faith. Not something that is seen or felt, but something very much alive in ourselves. "Go on," it says to us. "This is not the end." Many of us have lived through experiences where faith was all that we had left.
There was no money, no one to help us, no visible way of getting out. But we changed things somehow. Somehow we lived through it. The job materialized. The sickness left us. The way opened. That "somehow" is faith in action.
It is that which makes possible the things impossible because it is not our power that does this, but the unseen finger of God. There is a deeper truth in connection with faith, which is that it becomes unshakeably powerful when placed in God.
Faith in ourselves can only take us so far. But faith that has root in God, the One who can never fail, makes of us a power that has endurance not understood by man. When our faith rests in God its power is divine. It changes fear into courage, doubt into trust, and pain into purpose.
God does not always change the conditions around us instantly. But He gives to us strength to go through the conditions and in that process adds itself strength to our faith. Every man or woman who has survived has a story of faith. They are sometimes soft, sometimes loud, but always real.
Every one of us has lived through experiences where night came. Midnight robbed the desire to speak. The things of life to which one has been accustomed have vanished, nothing making sense. And yet we breathe, we live, we go on believing, hoping.
This is the miracle of faith. It is life itself. Faith does not promise an easy route but it does assure us that even though we walk through the waters of bitter fire we shall not be burned; though we pass through the stormy tempest we shall not be overwhelmed.
Because faith, especially faith in God, is not believing that which we see not. It is the assurance to us, not faith in the things that we see not, but to know who walks with us through it all. This is the very fact that keeps us alive.
