In my country Nigeria, there is a popular saying that "adulthood na scam" which simply means that growing into adulthood is not all fun and play rather a proof that we have grown to handle responsibilities that was avoided when we were kids.

No doubt, children of nowadays especially those in their 20s are in a hurry to leave their parents house because of the Freedom they want to experience. However, reverse is the case because when you plan to leave alone or to leave your parents home at an early age you should have a source of income that can cater for your needs. It is never easy for the young ones to be able to survive legally in a country that makes no provision for the unemployed.

I was never in a hurry to leave my parents house or do my life has been an adventure so far I had my Secondary Education far from home and was in a boarding school throughout the 6 years of my secondary education . Also, my university education was quite distant from home during my first degree and my second degree, my compulsory Youth Service to the country was also distance from my parents.

However, the only place I could seek refuge while I was job hunting was in my parents house. Although it was not easy because sometimes our parents especially mothers can overdo things, they send you on errands that are beneath your standards and they do not see anything bad in it. There are moments when you would want to be alone and not be distracted by anything but that is when they would scream your name so loud to send you on an errand.

This was kind of disturbing at some point but it did not want to make me live home but I saw it as a way to discipline myself to find something doing quickly that can give me my Freedom and space.

Now that I am on my own i feel excited because I have the opportunity to do things at my own convenience . I do not need to do some certain things. While I enjoy the freedom time and space it is definitely different from when I was home when three Square means what Sure.

In conclusion, I see adulthood as a means to be able to partake in several responsibilities that will discipline your mind, body and spirit both physically and emotionally. When you rely too much on your parents, it seems to draw you back on how to learn financial independency and to relate with the world at your own pace.

Well sometimes I think too that adulthood it's a scam 🤣 especially if there are no family behind you and you are overwhelmed by bills and responsibilities.

Hmm, when I hear the word adulthood, the first thing that comes to my mind 'na paying of price ooo. I really love your analysis, Ma, and what you said about responsibility really caught my attention. The truth is, a lot of youths today are roaming around, some even becoming useless, and the reason is just that they don’t have the mind to pay the price. My opinion though.

Anyone who is ready to pay the price will definitely be a responsible person. That is where responsibility starts. Before we step into adulthood, we should think, reflect, and count our costs. This stage is unavoidable unless death comes in God forbid that. But as long as we are alive, adulthood always means price, paying.

Many people run away from paying the price, and anyone who does that cannot be responsible. Paying the price could be studying more, being disciplined, working hard, making sacrifices. It is the willingness to pay price that shapes us and prepares us for the responsibilities adulthood brings.

During childhood we can't wait to grow up and now that's were grown, responsibility wants to choke us.
