During our childhood days, there were several stories that has to do with animals or people which our parents told us to serve as lessons, inspirations, morals and guidance to lead us in the right part of life. Sometimes, parents do not have a direct means of advising their children so the tell stories that are passed down from generations to help the child on the stand the reasons behind while certain actions are good or bad.
One of my favorite story is from my childhood has to do with why the tortoise has a cracked back. Apparently, there is a story backing up the fact that the the tortoise back was smooth but because he engaged in a greedy and selfish encounter with other animals he lost this beauty and ended up with a cracked shell.
The story goes thus ;
Sometime ago, there was a great feast that was meant to happen not on earth but in the sky and the birds of the Earth were invited. It was supposed to be an exclusive party only for birds but the tortoise also nicknamed as a cunning animal wanted to attend even though he had no wings to fly to the sky. The birds disapproved of this but in other for him to fly along with them he begged the birds to donate one feather each. The birds were many so when did donated a Feather each to him he had wings strong enough to fly.
As we all know, the tortoise is a cunning animal and before they left for the sky he convinced the birds to choose new names before going. The birds did not suspect anything funny but agreed to it and the thought is choose the name all of you. Subsequently, when they reached the sky there was plenty of foods to eat and drinks.
However, when it was time to eat, the Host said "all of you" come and eat. At this point tortoise reminded all the birds that the food belongs to him alone as he chose the name "all of you". 8t sounded as a joke at first to the birds but the greedy tortoise ate all the food until his belly was full and could not move. This got all the birds angry when they saw that he tricked them. In other to punish him, they collected their feathers from him and returned back to earth leaving him stranded.
When the birds refused to hear his pleading, he begged them to tell his wife to carry our all the soft things in his house for him to land on but the birds told his wife to bring out all the hard objects.
Tortoise saw his wife from far up the sky and he thought it was the soft things as he could see the objects, when he finally let himself down, the objects shattered his shell into pieces,which was patched but but was not longer beautiful.
The popular morals and lesson learned from this story are that, people should not be greedy and selfish to their fellow human beings as it can be destructive. Also, we should be humble and share whatever we can with other people.
