We’ve all had many firsts, some we anticipated, some we hated, some we loved, some came as a surprise, and some changed our lives. As much as some ‘firsts’ can be pretty uncomfortable and daunting, they are essential. Some of them don’t just teach us, they help guide and shape our lives as well.
The prompt for this week is about first times, and I love this topic. I just couldn’t help but jump on it.
Just
like everyone else, I’ve had many firsts in my life, but this particular ‘first’ I’m about to share is both funny and sad.
One of my unforgettable ‘firsts’ is losing a job. Oh dear, it was terrible and hilarious at the same time. Before that time, I had never experienced such a thing, and I sure as hell didn’t know what losing a job felt like until it happened.
That fateful day, one thing led to another, and my colleagues and I were served our termination letters. My first reaction? I laughed, I laughed so hard. The whole incident felt like a bad prank, one I was waiting for them to wrap up quickly.
All my life, the only time I had seen a person being served a termination letter was in movies, and where they shouted “You’re fired!” but certainly not me.
While others pondered the news, I was laughing hysterically. This got some of them annoyed. Yeah, that’s one of my crazy traits, I laugh way too much sometimes, but it sort of keeps me sane.
Still trying to wrap my head around how I was living a movie scene I had watched countless times. I still didn’t realize the termination was real until the next day when I got my severance pay and I didn’t wake up early for work because, there was none😂😂
I realized shit had hit the fan, and I was unemployed and didn’t know jack about job hunting or attending interviews.
The severance payment came in handy as I was able to use it judiciously, but when my account became red I knew I was screwed. Nothing prepared me for losing my job, I was young and broke, and it took a lot to get back on my feet.
Talking about this ‘first’ lightly right now is nothing compared to how I felt when the sad incident occurred, that’s the thing about ‘firsts’. They often leave a mark in our hearts.
