My Internship Journey

in HiveGhana19 days ago

As a student studying Environmental and Safety Engineering at UMAT, I’m currently interning at Golden Star Wassa Limited. This is to give me the chance to apply classroom knowledge to real mining operations, while learning how environmental protection and workplace safety are managed on a large scale.

I was assigned to the Environmetal Department, and so far it's been amazing. Truthfully, I didnt think I'd have this much fun. You see, I was informed on Thursday to report to work on Monday. My last paper was Friday, just the next day after the call. So I had only Saturday and Sunday to rest after pulling all-nighters to study for my exams. And I even had to journey home on Saturday, meaning I only had Sunday to rest actually.

I started my internship with tiredness, but it doesn't mean I wasn't grateful for this privilege. Others wanted this opportunity too but unfortunately didn't get, so I feel extremely lucky. The workers here have made things bearable for me and the other interns, and I've made amazing new friends with similar interests as mine. Oh and the meals? The absolute best. I'm seriously having a blast here :)

In my department, we're encouraged to explore various areas and pick a mini-project based on our interests. So the area I want to focus on for my internship mini-project is dust control and management. This is because dust may look simple, but in mining it has serious impacts. These impacts range from worker health, safety, and environmental compliance. By assessing dust sources and control measures, I hope to propose practical solutions that make a difference.

I’m also exploring related topics like mine water quality monitoring and heat stress management in underground mining, since all three areas are critical for sustainable and safe operations.

I’m excited to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully during this internship. Thanks for reading!

Aww. I’m glad you’re having fun being an intern. That’s one thing I was looking forward to doing in my third year but my department killed my ecstasy by putting it straight to us that we won’t be doing that.

Ow so sorry about that :(
