Stories from the fields.

When was the last time you heard nature talking to you in any way without words? When was the last time you experienced its quiet, beautiful beauty? One can sometimes learn that nature has a certain language of its own simply by being quiet for a while. Recently, while I was in Ghana, I stood in front of a large tree, and in that quiet moment, it seemed to me that I was listening to a certain message from the tree pertaining to power and life.

This lovely tree had many arms stretching far in all directions. Each of these branches is full of shiny green leaves, playing in the breeze. It was such a huge tree that it drew attention not by any noise but by the peace-inducing certainty of its existence. I took several pictures of it, hoping to show not only its beauty but also the message it was imparting without conveying a single word which I felt was one of balance, patience, and progress.

The more I looked at it, the more I could see how expressive nature can be. The soft rustling of its leaves, the certain play of light and shadow between its branches and the coolness of the air beneath its shade would say things of which words would never be able to convey the true meaning. It was a reminder to me that nature is full of means by which to speak to us. It is always finding ways through which to impart information, even though we may often not be able to hear it owing to our hurried ways of today.

The tree has a strong purpose in its environment besides being beautiful. It offers man a place to rest under its shade, affords birds a habitation, and gives freshness to the air for the benefit of all concerned. This one tree has in its quiet way become a symbol of bountifulness. It is a reminder to us all that real change does not always have to be loud. It may often be quiet and silent.

I knew how nature speaks to us when we take time to hear when I stood in front of it. The photographs I took from it are more than a collection of indicative photographs of a tree. They are a confirmation of the fact that life is able to impart wisdom through silence. We need to slow down once in a while to be able to hear it.
