The Importance of Referral Systems in Healthcare

in HiveGhana3 months ago

Hi guys,

It is Mid-week and I am certain that the lot of us simply can't wait for the weekend to be here, I trust your week has been good so far? Well, mine has been full of workload, currently, my work with my facility involves outreach community screenings three times every week so you can imagine.

Staying in the office to work is way more convenient and comfortable and less stressful as compared to having to put yourself out there, going to the people in need to provide services and care, the fun part though is that you get to work on a lot of people within a short period and you get to help so many people.

I am certain that I can always proudly say I love my job as an Optometrist but guess what I also really love doing? Writing and sharing with you here on the blockchain, I can say I am officially addicted to the blockchain because when work kept me for about a week away from the blockchain I had withdrawal syndrome. LOL

Anyway so today we ain't going to talk about a condition as we always do however I want to share my insight on the referral systems in healthcare, the good consultation with colleagues and other experts in their field to your own, and the benefit it brings to our patients. I hope you enjoy the read.

Referral Systems and Consults

As an Optometrist I am considered to be a specialist in my line of work and so for some of the Hospitals I tend to one day I do not go to my main hospital, I attend what we call a specialist clinic and patients a booked or made aware of special days where myself or my colleagues are available for a consult so they come in and see us.

Now as a specialist, my work is limited in a lot of ways to my field which means that I get the time to focus solely on everything about the eye so much so that I become very good at it and mostly likely would get a diagnosis concerning the eye quicker than a general practitioner would. Now that is my field, in the specialty of eyecare one would come to realize that we work closely with the Ophthalmologist, the Ophthalmic Nurse, the Optician, and the Neurologist.

That said, it doesn't mean those are the only individuals that form the eye team, the general nurse, the general physician, the surgeon, etc all form part of the team and it takes all of us to pull it together to achieve the common goal of patient care, however, sometimes our ego gets to us and that doesn't benefit the patient when it comes to that.

Sometimes we consider some things too trivial to send to our colleagues for a closer look at their expertise and we decide to just go ahead and treat it because we have seen it before and assume automatically that it is this or that when it is not directly in our line or specialty and when it doesn't go right the repercussions can be damaging.

The Neurologist may be more likely to catch a tumor in the brain quicker than the Optometrist however the Optometrist may get this quicker than the General Practitioner because any change to the brain's pressure when cells start occupying spaces they shouldn't be occupying would reflect in the fundus. So a second opinion and specialist consults are very important to healthcare and when we do this, it saves us a lot of work as well as helps solve our patient's problems, it is a win-win for both parties.

And so the next time you visit the Hospital and your physician asks that you see another colleague or a specialist from another department for an additional consult or a second opinion do not be dismayed neither should you be irritated, instead be happy that your physician puts your needs and solution first above all else is looking for fresh eyes to ensure he or she does the very best for you.

Sometimes we are misunderstood and sometimes patients do not understand and so with what I had to share with you today, I do hope that you my dear reader have had your eyes opened just a little bit to the good that comes from second opinions and referrals in the healthcare system. I will be sharing with you a sad story of how a young girl lost her life due to such flaws in the day ahead until then I wish you a great time and a great day. Cheers!

I often get the feeling that a certain medical facility doesn't provide the best care, and I'm not sure why we sometimes get referred to other facilities. Thank you for addressing this issue. I hope everyone will understand and respond appropriately.

Thank you too for reading and your understanding, i'm glad i could clarify things for you

I'm so happy to finally found out the reason why they always referred people to another department. Thanks for sharing this.

Glad i could be of help
