Living Within the System: Held Back or Lifted Up?

We all grew up hearing about the system, thinking it was something everyone could find their way around. We grew up to find out that the system is actually someone or a group of people. Here in Ghana, when someone says the system isn’t working, it means our leaders are actually not working to task.

But then, while the system isn’t probably working for you, it’s working to its full force for someone else out there. You just have to have someone in the system on your side to help you out. That’s why we are always told to build good connections which would serve as our connections in the future because to survive in this harsh world, you need others.

Growing up, I wouldn’t say everything was easy for me but one thing I knew for a fact was that, if worst should come to worst, my dad was there to step in for me. He always knew what to do about any situation so he was more like my system. So yeah, I always mostly had things working for me, thanks to my dad.

But as I grew up, my dad started to step back a bit to allow me to fully immerse myself in the real world. I started to learn how things worked in the real world, build connections and all of that. Speaking about the system, I’ve had the system work for me as well as work against me. But yeah, I’d prefer to talk about the system working for me because I haven’t had the system work against me that much.

During my university days, I worked on so many initiatives which got a lot of attention and support. The whole thing started as a something small, but soon enough it caught waves and everyone wanted to get involved. I reached out to the university administration for support on behalf on the team and they were in for it. The support was massive, we received support in different a forms, from the school administration , the student population and even outsiders.

Every step we took, we were further pushed by all these parties to do better for ourselves. I mean, what we were doing was a great and was making a lot of impact out there in the real world and it was nice to have people backing us up with every step we took. I’d say, those years were part of the best years of my life because I was able to impact the lives of so many people. And it felt good.

In all, I’d say the system can work for you when you position yourself well. You don’t always need someone in the system, you just need to make the system see the good work you’re doing and things will fall in their places.

Not all systems can work for you if you position yourself well, in some systems you can position yourself well and still get affected by the system..

That’s true.
