The cost of speaking out | Nigeria's economic hardship

in HiveGhana2 months ago (edited)

It's really bad how the present economy is turning from bad to worst, people are crying out on a daily basis complaining about the hardship and how cost of living is becoming so hard for the living. It's almost two years since the current president was sworn into power, to be honest this past two years has been a journey of constant torture and pain.

I'm a Nigerian and in my country only people with power, money and connection are the only ones that have a say in the country. As an ordinary citizen your opinion doesn't count as a matter of fact, your opinion as an ordinary citizen doesn't matter at all. Whenever an ordinary citizen comes out to talk about the government or rant about what him/her don't like about the government, it becomes a really big issue, in most cases the individual would be arrested and forced to tender an apology to the government.

Few days ago, a young lady who is a civil servant (An NYSC corp member) made a video about how the government is not doing well, she also said "the president is a terrible president". Few hours after she posted the video, it went viral, bloggers were reposting the video, lots of citizens were also reposting.

The video went viral in all the web2 platforms from tiktok, Facebook, Instagram and twitter (X). Now this is where things got out of hand. The young lady who posted the video started receiving threats from the NYSC board officials and other governments officials. This is actually crazy because, she was airing her opinion about the current bad economy and the bad government administration.

It's actually disappointing because, other citizens who were supposed to be happy that someone is finally bold enough to come out and speak up. Instead of backing her up, they were busy bashing her, saying all sorts of horrible things.

Nigerians are hypocrites, everyone is literally suffering from the hardship in the country, both the rich and the poor citizen are experiencing this current bad economy. Citizens would always complain about the bad rulership off the internet, but are too afraid to come out and speak up in the internet, but when someone decides to speak up, everyone would criticize the citizen calling the individual a clout chaser.

For the past two days, this young lady has been recieving constant threats, from different governments officials on the other hand, the ordinary citizens are not helping matters at all. I went through the comment section of her post, i was absolutely disappointed, the comments there was brutal, the most annoying aspect of all these is the fact that people dropping these comments are matured people, it was then i confirmed that maturity is not by age. I was so pissed reading so of the comments, i had to respond to some of them because i couldn't bare the fact that these people are just being unreasonable.

My opinion

I'm not a citizen that would come out on social media to rant about the economy or complain about the bad government, I'm not of the opinion that citizens should be ignored or threatened just because they're trying to air their minds or share their worries to the government .Every citizen has the right to complain and talk about how they feel if they're not treated fairly .

While going through the comment section of the video, someone said.
"You're being paid 33 thousand naira every month by the government, so why are you complaining about the bad economy, just keep quiet and stop chasing clouts"

Let's do a little maths

The government pays the NYSC corpers 33 thousand naira every month, which is approximately 22.7 HBD. Transportation from the coper's camp to their place of work is 1,500 thousand naira on a daily basis, which is approximately 1 HBD. Feeding costs 3 thousand naira per day, which is 2 HBD for daily feeding, on an average day, they're spending a total of 4,500 on a daily basis.

Now let's times 4,500 X 30 days = 135,000 naira at the end of the month, which is approximately 127 HBD .

Now how is it possible for a government worker receiving 33 thousand naira as salary is expected to survive, and someone is speaking up and all of a sudden everyone is calling her a clout chaser. It hurts to see that the country economy is crashing out and everyone is expected to sit, watch and say nothing. I can only hope the country gets better.

Well, I read you, feel you, understand you, and stand by you,...you know why? Because here where I live, hard stuff is being lived as well and we, normal people, fighting people, working people, good people are unable sometimes to go ahead in a world that seems to be created to bury the poor and the weaker, in liquid terms, if you know what I mean, sometimes when we get to think about it we get angry a say, fuck!!!! This has to stop, but it doesn't, cause being angry, protesting without any supporting power behind is worthless and I do, I do understand you, yes I do, you might think I don't, but I do, cause I lived poverty, cause I've lived injustice, cause I've lived hunger as well, and who is there to blame, to help, to understand, to support, to change a thing. No one is, we are all human and it doesn't seem like we are, power is eating us all and we are eating us ourselves, shame on us humans for that and for all the pain we are causing our planet, all species around it and our own. We go humans are all but humans and deserve no fucken thing or opportunity that's been given to us. And I better stop now. Greetings for you my dear. Know something, there's no other way out but that one you think I think is the only way out, yes, that one, gigs for you. Blessings. I'm out now. God!!!!

It's so down hearting when ever I think about the way forward, because the country isn't encouraging at all

The current situation in the country is truly disheartening. People can’t freely express their thoughts without fear, it’s a sad reality.
I’ve come to realize that our only hope is really in God .
