[Hive P v. S] Week 22-32: Long time no update

Lots of progress, no showings

Time really do fly, hard to believe it has been a whole 10 weeks since the last update!

While procrastinating to post an update, the progress on the project has gone in the opposite direction. A lot has been done so let's get right to it.

In the last update support for gamepads and a virtual joystick was added. After that work continued with giving the tail new abilities and a smoother movement.

The tail has momentum and will slow down and speed up as it changes target and direction, giving it a bit more of a living appearance. It also got a bunch of different interests in life beyond chasing the player around the screen. It likes to eat stuff, go on discovery journeys and a few other things.

The addition of these new interest are to make it less predictable and to make sure that the tail is not always circled in the center as the player loop around it collecting stars. With the new behaviors it will spread out better over the level and the paths will change, making sure that the game will not get the player locked into a position not possible to get out of. It needs a bit of tweaking and will revisit this part again before the final release.

The second large update has been to add levels and progression. The game starts at level 1 and goes up to level 10, for each level something new is added. It can be a power up or a behavior in the tail. For each level the amount of stars increases, making it possible for the tail to get longer and longer. When level 10 is reached, the game will not add anything more but the speed of the game keeps increasing up to level 20 at which point the game should be so difficulty you have to zone in to keep going. This too is an area that will be tweaked further after everything else is done.

To get the progression visible, texts and effects was added for reaching new levels and getting various bonus points. A tail meter was added to indicate that you have to fill the meter and then eliminate the tail to get to the next level.

Finally a spawner was created, it takes care of spawning the power ups based on which are available in the current level config and adjusted for the current situation. If certain criteria are met, it will more likely spawn a certain power up and so on.

The end is getting near. The target for the moment is to release the final game at the end of march. The two last areas that need work are audio and making the native builds. Both these have been initiated this week and progress has been good so far. In fact game is already built natively and tested for Mac, Linux, Windows, iOS and Android. Confident about the end of march date, but then again, you never know!

Hive P v. S is a mashup of classic arcade games. You fly around collecting stars, each star collected spawn an entity that forms a tail that gets longer and longer. Avoid the tail for as long as possible until you get a power up that gives you a limited time to eliminate the tail. If successful you'll get bonus points and new stars are spawned. Rinse and repeat.

If the final score is high enough, you'll get the opportunity to submit the score to the high score table. The high score table is saved on Hive and is viewable on Hive as well as in-game for all users.

Game will be released for browsers, as a PWA and as native builds for mobile and computer platforms.
