He repeated three more times, then strained his ears. The buzzing seemed to get closer, he screamed again, but the sound was faint and hoarse. He tapped a branch on the trunk. Every minute that passed had a dilated and eternal duration, hope and despair contended for the soul of that lonely man at the mercy of a cruel and stepmotherly nature.

Gli parve di sentire quel suono nuovamente, fece un giro su se stesso per capirne la direzione, come un'antenna parabolica che cerca di captare un segnale di universi lontani. Inspirò quanta più aria potè, quindi urlò come non aveva mai fatto in vita sua, ne uscì un suono disperato, come quello di un animale in agonia. Ripetè altre 3 volte, poi tese le orecchie. Il ronzio parve avvicinarsi, urlò ancora, ma il risuonò flebile e rauco. Battè con un ramo sul tronco. Ogni minuto che passava aveva una durata dilatata ed eterna, speranza e disperazione si contendevano l'anima di quell'uomo solo in balia di una natura crudele e matrigna.
