You nailed it. Cryptocurrencies are presenting a huge problem because some of them are securities. Some act more like commodities. And some are just novelties. The challenge for regulators, and private entities like YouTube, is figuring out which fall into each category. Since that hasn't been determined yet, I think they should lay off until the rules have been established. To do this act Christmastime when people are looking the other way, as you say, isn't cool.
