I got a notification on my Google Photos showing the Wedding Ceremony I attended about two years ago and it made me realized that it has been a long time I attended events. Looking back, I can boldly say that I usually don't go a weekend or two without having either a wedding ceremony or a birthday bash to attend. Some times, my Fridays and Saturdays are occupied especially when I'm very close to either of the couple - the Friday is for spinsters night or bachelorette party as some people call it and Saturdays for the main event.
Most of these events use to be of my friends and colleagues when I was still working in the corporate world (a financial institution). There is a motivation that makes you pumped up for attending an event when you know that all your favorite people will be in attendance. The event is already lit even before it started. I have had to attend a colleague's wedding in her hometown that took about 8 hours of travelling by road and it was fun because we went as a group. Lately, I have been invited to some events that I failed to attend because I feel like it won't be interesting since I didn't make the plans with close pals.
There was a particular wedding ceremony that I had prepared to attend late last year but I cancelled at the dying minute. Infact, I had made my dress (an elegant owanbe gown) few days to the event as I look forward to the D-day. But on the day of the event I just decided not to go. I can't pinpoint the turnoff but I just didn't feel like attending any event. I just decided to send the bride some cash gifts some days after the ceremony and duly apologised for not being able to attend.
I may have to say that some of the factors that affected my party life is the fact that I'm very busy during the week in my shop attending to the needs of my customers and the only time I have to rest and recharge is on Saturday (sometimes) and Sunday. I cherish these two days so much since I began my business as a fashion designer. There are times that I work on Saturday when I have so much on my table to finish up, so I wouldn't trade my business for some events when my customer's fabrics are waiting to be sewn into a masterpiece.
Apart from the stress of work being a detterent to attending owanbe I think another challenge is the high cost of transportation especially when the event is in another State or City. I was talking to a friend who is in a dilemma sometimes week. He is expected to attend his best friend's wedding in another City next month with his family and he has calculated over NGN700,000($439.23) for their flight (to and fro) and accommodation expenses. It is an event he must attend due to his closeness with the groom but the financial implications seems to be too much. Well, the honest advice I gave him is that he should attend the event alone to save cost.
In Nigeria, Weekends are for Owanbe and it is apparent in the different attires that you spot on their way to these parties. Most Owanbe goers wear matching outfits known as aso-ebi that was sold to them by the organizers of the events, these fabrics are uniforms that are used to easily recognise a particular family, group or association. For instance, in a wedding event, the grooms family may decide to choose a gold colored fabric while the bride's family will choose a pink fabric. So anywhere section of the event centre you spot people dressed in gold you'd know they are the grooms family and anywhere you spot a pink group you would easily know it is the bride's family.
Just like you all must have known that I am a foodie, I always look forward to eating good meals at events. This is one of the things I miss the most in Nigerian parties apart from the dance and music. I also always look forward to seeing different outfits that girls, ladies and women wear to know more trendy designs that I can adopt.
