A Walk to the Memorial of Tip the Loyal Collie

We had a little walk around the reservoir to find a memorial of Tip the loyal collie. In 1953, he went out for a walk with his owner, Joseph Tagg on Howden Moor, Derbyshire. Joseph was an elderly man who succumbed to the elements and died on the cold, icy moors. Tip loyally stayed with Joseph's body for 15 weeks.

We parked up at the information centre and went up the lane.

I can remember coming here as a child and feeling upset because I thought Tip had died at the scene.

It wasn’t until years later, that I found out he survived and was adopted by Joe's niece living another year, becoming a local celebrity. The National Canine Defence League awarded Tip a medal and a commemorative stone was placed where he laid with his owner. Tip was later buried nearby a year later.

Such a sad story.

Yes. At least he became a hero.
