Sunday, for me, is a day still in evolution here on Hive. It used to be the day of my weekly giveaway which was brought to an end, leaving the day rather vacant as to any particular theme. I would still like to bring back some sort of giveaway, maybe in the form of a charity, but I'm still kicking around ideas. I'll keep you posted!
It's been a couple weeks since I shared one of my Silver Strike tokens and it feels like a great day to share another. These are commemorative tokens made of silver or brass that were paid out to winners who played the Silver Strike Slot Machines at casinos around the world. Sadly, these machines are near extinct with only a few remaining in some small casinos. I've collected them for many years, but only the ones that contain solid silver, and I prefer those from defunct casinos, although I do have some from institutions still in operation. Today's silver comes from one fitting the latter category.
Gold Coast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada is built away from the main Strip and focuses on locals for their business. They've been in operation since 1986 and are still in operation 38 years later, for a hotel casino in Las Vegas that's an impressive run!
Without further ado here it the token of the day:
About the token:
This beautiful token was produced in 2002 shortly after the attacks on the US of September 11, 2001. At the time most tokens in the US had patriotic themes and Gold Coast was no different. This one was part of Gold Coast Salutes Heroes series, featuring the US Declaration of Independence. The Declaration was the document declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain and was approved on July 4, 1776. Although commonly believed by most to have been signed on that date as well, by most accounts it was approved that date and signed on August 2, 1776. Just an interesting piece of trivia!
Gold Coast also produced three other tokens in the same series including a heraldic eagle, the World Trade Center towers, and the American flag. I think this is the least attractive of the three, but it's the one I own...
It's a gorgeous token with just about 0.6 Troy ounces of solid silver surrounded by a brass ring. The current melt value of the silver alone is $27.76 as of current pricing, however, collectors will pay much more for these historic items. I won't be selling anytime soon, I really enjoy my Silver Strike collection!
