Today I'm sharing another cyanotype I made recently, this one blends the technique with watercolor painting.
I started experimenting with cyanotypes in 2022, but took a break for a while, and only recently began playing with them again, so I’m feeling a bit excited to share these new results.
For this piece, I didn’t have any big plans, I just wanted to use up the last of my cyanotype A and B mixture, so it wouldn’t go to waste.I decided to apply it to this paper where I had already painted some little cats in watercolor
Those cats came to life on a day when I was feeling very sad and just needed to paint something to try and relax. I grabbed my brushes and simply started painting cats on a piece of paper, no purpose at all. I just wanted my mom to be alone, and so the cats started to appear, no planning.
I made lots of cat heads, and I thought these two looked both sad and sweet, so I got the idea to try adding cyanotype on the same sheet.
I placed the flowers over the cyanotype, covered everything with a piece of glass, and left it under the sun for 20 minutes.
Up to that point, everything seemed to be going well, until it was time to wash it.
That’s when I realized I would need to be very careful washing the paper, since it already had a watercolor painting on it, and I didn’t want to risk losing it too.
So I used a piece of glass to cover the cats’ heads, and started washing the paper very slowly and carefully, also using a brush to help with the process.
In the end, everything turned out fine, and I even placed the piece in a small frame because I thought it looked really cute.
I loved the contrast between the blue of the cyanotype and the watercolor, and now I have this piece in my living room, where I can look at it every day.
I hope you liked it!
