Back from Puerto Escondido – Memories Along the Way

I’ve put together a short video with some moments from our return journey from Puerto Escondido, in Mayabeque province, back to Havana. In my previous post I mentioned I was over there.

It was a beautiful trip with wonderful company. These friends, besides enjoying great music, having loads of fun and being adventurous, also care deeply about the environment.

In Puerto Escondido we were told that rubbish collection by the local government was quite a serious issue, among many others that could be solved with a bit of will… but anyway, that’s another story. So we decided to carry all our waste—cans, plastic bags, disposable containers and so on—until the first stop where we could properly dispose of it in a bin. In the video you can see that when we stopped at a place called Las Palmeritas, near Arcos de Canasí, we fulfilled our mission.

It’s sad to see how many people visiting that paradise, full of history and curiosities at every step, are careless when it comes to protecting the environment. Puerto Escondido, precisely, is one of those places that invite reflection, admiration of nature’s beauty and surrender to its magic, because it’s a protected area, rich in biodiversity, with landscapes so breathtaking they leave you speechless.

Sweet ride and amazing place! The garbage problem is atrocious here as well. I have no idea how it is legal to sell single shot bottles of liquor as I see them littered EVERYWHERE. Means people pull over while driving, down their bottles and toss em out the window so "someone" doesn't find out most likely. It is really obnoxious. On every road I ride they are there in the ditch.

I would guess more people are biking there with the fuel issues?

Hello, yes, I know that in many places rubbish is a serious issue. What a shame… it starts with individuals and becomes even more dramatic when it’s the government that, for one reason or another, doesn’t bother to keep things in order and seems not to care either.

The road was almost deserted… two or three cars, a tanker lorry, a trailer, a bus… we spent five hours pedalling and didn’t see much more than that. Once we entered Havana there was more movement. I suppose people travel less to other provinces now because of the fuel issue, and the state is no longer offering bus services as before, having reduced them drastically.

I would guess more people are biking there with the fuel issues?

Absolutely! 😃

With so few on the roads I'd be out for long rides all the time. The humidity might put a damper on it but hey, a guy can dream.

Putting rubbish in the right place, just as it should be. Cyclists have healthy habits and values in their blood; I like this community. The video has turned out great. @nanixxx 😉

😃 Some cyclists… I identify more with the environmentalists. 🤣 Thanks, my friend, for stopping by, I truly value this after what you’ve told me about the situation over there.

No te preocupes @nanixxx, fue un placer. !! Gracias a ti.

Great initiative on waste responsibility.

😊 Yes, we are delighted to contribute.

Thank you!

Wow, wow, wow—you guys really put a lot of energy and motivation into this adventure! It looks like an incredible bike trip. I absolutely loved the video—especially that little cat cameo, haha! I love that you do things like this, my dear Nanix. I feel like cycling is one of my "deferred dreams" as long as I don't have a place of my own here in the capital, but someday I hope to pedal for miles just like you do. Sending you a huge hug! ❤️

Hello… so glad you’re visiting me. 😀

Well, I believe we can always overcome those limits that are only imposed by the mind. Of course it takes preparation, and I’ve been getting myself ready to do this. When they told me about going, the mind — always looking out for me — said: don’t you think it’s too much? shouldn’t you stay?, what if you can’t?, what if…?

But I told it to be quiet and followed my heart.

🤗 Abrazo recibido y de vuelta.

😍 hahaha, I know that feeling...

Eso si fue una gran aventura y lo mejor cuidando el ambiente

Sí, definitivamente. Gracias @suisver! 😀

That looks like an amazing trip with great company. I love the views on the seaside. Isn't there a lot of wind? I live near the coast and here is aways wind 😂

I really appreciate the environmental awareness too. I sometimes see a lot of garbage along the cyclepaths here as well. It really annoys me that some people just throw their garbage on the side of the road. You've set a good expample!

I’ll try to upload more photos from the trip when I get the chance. It was very windy. On the way to Puerto Escondido, we had a headwind the whole time, and then there were the hills. Lots of hills. On the way back, we had a tailwind and it was almost all downhill. Sometimes I didn’t even have to pedal much to maintain a speed of 30 km/h, and on the slopes I reached 46 km/h, taking care to brake a little. Because the wind was sometimes blowing from the side and pushing my bike, which, unlike everyone else’s, is very light.

Thank you! 😀

🙏👏

¡Gracias!

Good afternoon, @nanixxx. It’s striking to see the roads so empty... That said, Puerto Escondido is a little paradise, and it’s a shame that people don’t take better care of it. The music in the video is perfect for accompanying the return from a great adventure.

Un abrazo muy grande!!

Good afternoon @enraizar,

Did you notice? Very little traffic, that’s right. That was good for us. 😂

Hug received and sent back!

Graciaaaaas! 😀👋

😁

😴👋

Hasta mañana. Que descanses.

That rubbish issue is a problem in many countries; it’s particularly bad in Argentina. We have a good cleaning system here, but since there’s been so much illegal immigration… things have changed. I loved the video!!! I’d love to see more of those gems!! Good night!

More of those gems? Probably one more… hahaha. Gracias Avecilla.

Todos allá se van a dormir 😅. ¡A descansar!

Descansé poco jajaja buenos días!!
