Curation
One of the way of supporting other content creators and distributing hive resources on the block chain is called curation. Which can be done by giving any author of your interest an upvote.
However, curating content is beyond just simply giving someone an upvote, a good curator will have to check for the originality and quality of a content before giving up a vote by scrutinizing such content.
This is very necessary for the protection of hive platform from people who may copy and paste other people's contents and claimed it as their own. Or people who may knowingly or unknowingly commit plagiarism.
A great responsibility
Curation should be seeing more than investing your hive power on other people's contents, votes should be giving to a derseving authors at all time. A great example of such hive curator is Scholaris, who not only dedicate his time to fishing out people that commit plagiarism but also give them a chance to correct their mistake and learn. I think hive needs more people like him.
Thought this can be time-consuming and tasking but they say 'power comes with responsibilities' and 'whatever is worth doing is worth doing well right'?.
How do I know an original quality content to curate?
Here are things I looked out for in a content:

Is the content original? There are free tools out there that can be use to check if a content is original or is a copy and paste work. I do this only when I suspect that an author had committed plagiarism.

I do try and evaluate the effort put into creating a content by an author before deciding my voting value to him/her.
3•
I do checked to know if an author had used his/her own images and if not are those images well-sourced?
4•
And lastly, there are a lot of good authors that I already knew and trust their content, which I don't have to go to a lot of trouble before I upvote them.
How the curation should be done by the community?

As a community, important should be given to those authors who put in a lot of effort to showcase their content. Not just that, engagement should be encourage by rewarding those people that bring meaningful engagement to the community with votes. And i have a great respect for hive communities who took their curation very serious.
What you would do if you were a whale?

Being someone that starts from scratch on hive, if I'm to be a whale, the best I will do is to support as many hive good authors as I can with my hive power and as well follow the curation trials of some of the amazing community project that are adding valuable to hive.
Talking about communities that add value to hive, I came across this post by @diyhub Here and I love how they are supporting various great hive authors, they even offer a delegation program, so if you have some hive seating in your account you can put it to use and earn in return

These are great suggestions, but majority of the heavyweights curators usually just vote those old users they know and we the less know users have to work ten times more to even come in their consideration at all
Yeah, it seems that way but going around to search for new authors all the time is kind of very stressful for them I think, and that is why is wise for the newbies to participate in contests that way is easier for them to be found.
And again growing in hive is gradual process, those people with big payout has been here for so long and they have earn it, am sure with time, consistency and hard work we can all get there.
