Reclaiming my time

I watched the grandkids build a fort out of play floor-mats, the floor, the walls, even a touch of a roof. Food, weapons, vehicles and even a dump truck were stored and used to wage war. The food was ordered and delivered of course, then eaten. Victory was declared and the fort was unceremoniously and brutally raised to the ground. All of this done in the space of 20 minutes max. The remnants were left as is. It was time to go outside and do some mining with the front end loader and dump truck. Phew, ok, lets go. I would like to say at this point that I would like that life.

My next day consisted of first thing always - coffee - then outside to pick up the dog poop. Its rubbish bin day, so empty all the bins and refresh with new bags, everything into the big bin and out onto the street. Sweep out the apartment, make a quick list of things to get from the shops. Aaaagh hell there goes the electricity off. For how long, who knows. Got to get the part for the weed eater, refill the gas cylinder and a new toilet seat with lid. Doesn't matter what the list is - this will get you home by lunch four hours later. Why doesn't anything take 20 minutes any more.
Anyway home, install the new toilet seat, fix the weed eater. Aagh hell the shower head is faulty - uninstall , clean, soak, pray, reinstall. Ok, good well done. What else, ok the couch needs to move, and while we at it ... and things need to go back to storage unit. The computer keyboard has disappeared, no its on the TV box. Go to the shop and get new keyboard. Bring the rubbish bins in. Don't forget to throw something down your gullet for supper. The next thing you know its eight o' clock at night. Ive had one hellova day, but I have achieved nothing, have done nothing. Exhaustingly frustrating.

What is the point I am trying to make. When we did a 8 to 5 day. There had to be production, progress. A proper grind to get things done. Well, unemployed, retrenched, retired, what ever your situation. Somehow I've lost the ability to be productive. There has to be the same discipline.

So its time to make a plan and do the hard time. I am in the middle of starting a new little business. In the same way you have to plan your time if you were doing an 8-5 job. What are the goals, daily, weekly, monthly. I need to think and plan to make these goals come to fruition.

  1. What are the necessities. Don't forget to do what you love. Just a few things. (Must make room for these things).
  2. Concentrate on removing time-wasting activities. This also means prioritising. I am a fan of a black board wall. If I have a list or priorities, I don't have to remember. Minimise time wasters to make room for priorities.
  3. Schedule time. What is imperative as apposed to what I actually do. Love my 15 minutes of Tai-Chi. So block it out and then work around that, above it. Love my 20 minutes sorting the garden out. So block it out and schedule after that or before that.
  4. Consolidate. Errands and chores. Block it out baby. How about all of our favourites - Admin/Emailing. Block it out right after Tai Chi, when you are fresh and bright eyed.

Ok, so I am on a roll here. Feels good, feels right. Now I have to put this in to practice. One thing at a time right. Baby steps. Its never to late to learn something new - is it.

Tell you what, I will keep you in the loop as to how it goes, I'll do a weekly post on progress. As a fan of the wonderful Jordon Peterson who said - for him, making your bed is the first step to “putting your house in order” and “taking on some responsibility.”
