Finally Got My Toes into Some New (V-Trail) Five Fingers

For me, no serious running goals can launch without a fresh pair of these bad boys: Vibram V-trail 2.0s (size 15)! I am actually quite limited in my choice of running shoe due to apparently being a not-so-distant cousin to Sasquatch. Luckily for me, when I converted to the barefootish running movement after reading Born to Run, Vibram had me covered with their Five (big) Fingers line maxing out in my size!

Of course, being the all-or-nothing type that I am, I first tried actual barefoot running, but after six miles of asphalt having never walked on anything rougher than ceramic tile without shoes since I was a kid, I basically turned our foyer into a crime scene when I got back to the house; "streaked with gore" was the phrase that kept running through my mind. Luckily, my horrified, but tolerant and supportive partner was able to patch me up and get me ambulatory again but insisted I try to find something, anything, to put between me and the road if I was going to become a barefoot evangelist. She's wicked smaht like that.

Sort:

six miles of asphalt and your feet not conditioned to it ... yikes
My sister once walked the 2-3 miles from her place to mine through town with her daughter on her back and bare feet. But, my sister at that time was never seen with shoes on in the warm weather ... she had some tough feet

Man, I make it as far as (ow, crap, oh man, that stings, ow) my berry bush in the backyard hahahahaha, lots of little tiny pins-&-needles-rocks in between. I've never spent any time barefoot outside before.
Hilarious post @bitterirony!

@bitterirony,

First... found you by hearing your presentation at #pypt at @dreemport... Your wonderful other @alessandrawhite shared it there... and here I am! While I have heard of the importance of being "grounded" I can not see that it is good to run barefoot...

That is a big no... But I am certainly glad to hear you can do what you love. I look forward to seeing what you have to share with us next, my friend!

I get that barefoot (or barefoot ish) running is counterintuitive. I was won over by reading Born to Run because I could relate to the author's frustration that everyone's proposed solution to his running problems was to "get a bicycle" and was persuaded by the idea that so many of the modern running ailments started when shoe companies began adding all the extra support and thereby changing our natural stride. By running barefoot, so the theory goes, we stay on the balls of our feet, as we are designed to do, instead of running on our heels just because we have thick soles to absorb the shock. But I am not a medical person and can only offer my own anecdotal support that running in Vibrams has kept me injury free for over ten years. Plus they're kind of punk.🤘

@bitterirony,

Good morning! I hope you know when I said "That's a big no"... I didn't mean you were wrong for running like this. I grew up out in the country... we had a chicken coupe, gravel roads, all that. I have some memories of running around outside barefoot, but fast forward to now... ouch? Lol... I just didn't want you to think I was downing you for wearing these awesome-looking things. Anything we can do to be "grounded" is of a positive nature for sure! Hope you have a great day today!

No worries, I didn't think that at all! Love to talk about all things running. Have a great day yourself!

Wow, the Five Fingers look more elaborate and fancy with every generation. Congrats on your choice.

What is the feel and how far do you run in them?

They make me feel connected to the road/trail and, most importantly, give me that barefoot feel so that I am running more on the balls of my feet and not just pounding my heels. They weren't around during my marathon days and the farthest I've taken my previous (non-trail) Fivefingers was a 15 mile road race but they are going with me to Leadville next year so I will keep you posted ("Barefoot Ted" McDonald of Born to Run fame ran Leadville in 25:54 in 2009 wearing a pair of Fivefingers KSO Treks so I'm in good company).

This will be a major achievement. Congrats in advance.

The farthest I've gone in barefoot shoes was a half marathon run with Feelmax Neesa, the original model.

I can't make it across the hallway on tile without shoes. I have no idea how you made it six miles! I know several runner friends who love these shoes. I hope they serve you very well.
