Happy weekend, guys 👋🏽. I hope you're all doing great. Today, I want to share my experience visiting a place I hadn't been able to explore before... The Drawing and Print Cabinet 🎨 — an institution open to all of us who live in this amazing city (Valencia), and of course, to anyone just passing through who wants to check it out.

When I arrived, I came across this beautiful mural by Wladimir Zabaleta ✨, followed by a wrought iron gate crafted by Alexis Mujica and an artistic grille by Rafael Martínez that, in my opinion, gives this house a distinct charm compared to its surroundings (though upon entering, I was also welcomed by a magnificent piece by Carmelo Galicia 🤩).

I got there just after 3:30 p.m., but they're actually open Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Thanks to Ana Legón (the Cabinet Manager), I found out that this space has a nineteen-year history, beautifully preserved thanks to the incredible work of Joel Topel (now deceased) and his wife María Cora Páez Topel, who dedicated themselves to building a family art collection. 🖼️
📌 Part of their private collection, showcased in celebration of their anniversary, is titled "Carabobo: Territory of the Arts" (and it will be on display until May 16).
Right from the entrance, you can see that the house is divided into several spacious sections, allowing the artwork to truly stand out. However, over time, even this layout became too limited for all the pieces the family owns.
That’s when the team (years ago) decided to transform parts of the space into multiple exhibition rooms and also use their own anniversary as an opportunity—not a constraint—to make sure we can continue to enjoy and connect with all these pieces full of history. And although this year it was celebrated on March 8th, its original date is February 19th.

So, every year when they celebrate 🎉, they first choose a concept — what message they want to share — and then select and display works that align with it.

And if you’re wondering what the theme was for this anniversary exhibit 🤔, they chose “foreign” artists. That means, when you visit, you’ll get to see works by artists who weren’t born in the city — or even in the country — but still contributed their art to Valencia.
As I walked through, I noticed they showcase all kinds of visual arts, but I also learned that in the beginning, they only collected "print" art. In fact, that’s where their name comes from — "Gabinete" (Cabinet), because it stores paper 📜.
Even though the event I attended that day was focused on a community talk led by Professor Tulio Hidalgo Vitale about the essential resource that flows into our homes (water 💦), this place actually began as a family-driven project...

Which is why their main mission is to promote education through all kinds of cultural and educational activities for the community, such as:

Workshops, talks, dances 💃🏻🕺🏻, theater, micro-stories, Artekid activities, and all sorts of events that celebrate art in all its forms. 🎭
All you have to do is stop by and pitch your idea — they'll consider it. 🤗

After hearing the professor speak, we got to spend some time sharing our thoughts and questions about the main topic (we also took a little break for water or juice). 🍊

Now, from the entire tour, I’m taking away these three pieces as my favorites from the anniversary exhibit: The Watchdog by Alexis Mújica, Eugine Biel-Bienne (an Austrian artist), and Red Drops by Carmelo Galicia 🤩.
But more than just the artworks, I absolutely loved the architecture, getting a glimpse (even from afar, haha) of how beautifully this team is organized, and the warm welcome you feel the moment you arrive 🙌🏽.
They’re truly kind, professional, and when you hear them talk, you can tell — and feel — how passionate they are about their work and the mission they carry out every day: to make the Drawing and Print Cabinet a cultural treasure of Carabobo State and of Venezuela. ✨

I also want to share with you all this beautiful mural displayed inside the office. Even though it's located in the administrative area (out of public view), it's a truly iconic piece for this institution. 🎨
A fun fact I find really interesting is that it was created by the artist Rubén López two years before the GDEV even opened.

In the mural, the largest figure represents Mr. León Topel, and those surrounding him are almost all the artists who have contributed their passion and artistic talent to the family’s collection (some are still being illustrated). 🖌️ It's one of the best representations of the incredible work this team has been doing to support the culture and education of the people of Valencia and to preserve Venezuela’s cultural heritage.

El Gabinete del Dibujo y de la Estampa 🎨, una institución abierta para todos los que habitamos en esta gran ciudad (Valencia) y, por supuesto, a los que estén de paso y deseen conocerla.

Al llegar me encontré con este hermoso mural de Wladimir Zabaleta ✨, seguido de un portón de hierro forjado por Alexis Mujica y una reja artística de Rafael Martínez que, para mí, le otorga a esta quinta mucha distinción de sus alrededores (aunque al entrar también fui recibida con una gran obra Carmelo Galicia 🤩).

Yo llegué a un poco más de las tres y media, sin embargo, ellos están abiertos de lunes a viernes de 10:00 a.m. a 04:00 p.m.
Gracias a Ana Legón (la gerente de Gabinete), pude conocer que es un espacio con diecinueve años de historia, muy bien preservado por la gran labor que Joel Topel (ya fallecido) y su esposa María Cora Páez Topel han dedicado a adquirir una colección de arte familiar. 🖼️
📌 Y parte de la colección privada expuesta en su aniversario, tiene por nombre "Carabobo Territorio de las Artes" (la cual estará disponible hasta el 16 de mayo).
Desde la recepción se puede apreciar que esta quinta está dividida en varias secciones que son bastante espaciosas para que las obras destaquen; sin embargo, esta misma distribución llegó un punto en el que se les hizo reducido para todo el arte que la familia tiene.
Es aquí donde el gabinete (desde hace años), decidió modificar sus áreas a salas múltiples expositivas e igualmente utilizar su propio aniversario para que esto no sea una limitante que nos impida disfrutar y conectar con todas estas piezas llenas de historia. Y aunque este año fue conmemorado el 8 de marzo, su fecha original es el 19 de febrero.

Por lo que cada vez que están de cumple 🎉, eligen primero ¿qué concepto será el mensaje a transmitir? Para así traer esas obras y ubicarlas.

Y si te preguntas, ¿cuál fue el de esta exposición aniversario? 🤔 ellos eligieron a artistas "foráneos". Es decir que, cuando llegues, podrás conocer las obras de artistas que no nacieron en la ciudad o en el país; sin embargo, aportaron su arte a Valencia.
Aunque al recorrerla pude apreciar que poseen todo tipo de artes plásticas, también pude aprender que en sus inicios solo coleccionaban arte "en grabado". De este material también se origina su nombre... El "Gabinete" (porque guardan papel) 📜.
Si bien el evento al que me reuní este día fue para conocer "en comunidad" la explicación y planteamientos del profesor Tulio Hidalgo Vitale con relación al vital líquido que llega a nuestros hogares (el agua 💦), esta es una institución que nace de un concepto familiar...

Por lo que ellos se enfocan principalmente en fomentar la educación a través de todo tipo de actividades educativas que aporten cultura a la comunidad, como:

Talleres, conferencias, bailes 💃🏻🕺🏻, teatros, microrrelatos, actividades de artekid y todo tipo de eventos que permitan celebrar el arte en todas sus manifestaciones. 🎭
Solo necesitas acercarte a esta institución y plantear la actividad que deseas realizar para que así ellos puedan considerarla. 🤗

Ya luego de escuchar al profesor, pudimos disfrutar de un tiempo para ofrecer nuestros puntos de vista e interrogantes con relación al tema principal (también hicimos una pausa para tomar agua o jugo). 🍊

Ahora, yo del recorrido me llevo estas tres obras como mis favoritas en esta exposición aniversario: el Perro Guardián de Alexis Mújica, Eugine Biel-Bienne (un artista austriaco) y las gotas rojas de Carmelo Galicia. 🤩
Aunque más allá de las obras, me encantó toda la arquitectura, poder ver (así sea de lejos, jeje) la forma en la que este hermoso equipo está organizado y cómo te hacen sentir de bien cuando llegas. 🙌🏽
Definitivamente, son muy cálidos, profesionales y cuando los escuches hablar, podrás ver y sentir que verdaderamente están apasionados con su trabajo y el objetivo por el que diariamente están allí: para hacer del Gabinete de Dibujo y de la Estampa un patrimonio cultural del estado Carabobo y de Venezuela.✨
Actualización:
Igualmente, deseo compartirles este hermoso mural que el gabinete posee en sus instalaciones. Aunque se encuentra en el área administrativa (lejos de la vista al público), es una pieza emblemática de esta institución. 🎨
Un dato que considero muy curioso, es que fue elaborado por el artista Rubén López dos años antes de la apertura del GDEV.

En este, la imagen de mayor tamaño hace referencia al Sr. León Topel y quienes le rodean, son "casi todos" los autores que han aportado su pasión y talento artístico a la colección que esta familia posee (debido a que todavía faltan artistas por terminar de ilustrar) 🖌️. La mejor referencia de todo el gran trabajo que este gabinete ha venido desarrollando para la cultura y educación del gentilicio valenciano y el patrimonio cultural venezolano.
