Daily Blog - The day we met someone inspiring: a 70-year-old mountain runner and winner. / El día que conocimos a alguien inspirador: un señor de 70 años corredor de montaña y ganador. 😃❤️

One of the goals I have on every trip I take is to meet new friends or people I can socialize with and take something good from them. Fortunately, so far this has been exactly the case and in all the trips I have made I have been able to make friends with someone interesting, with whom we shared chats, mates or walks through some beautiful place. Sometimes it takes me a few days to get used to a new place and to have confidence with the people around me, but luckily in Ushuaia I was able to make some friends right away with whom I spent several entertaining days 😃.

Uno de los objetivos que tengo en cada viaje que hago es conocer amigos nuevos o personas con las que pueda sociabilizar y llevarme algo bueno de ellas. Por suerte, hasta el momento esto viene siendo exactamente así y en todos los paseos que hice pude amigarme con alguien interesante, con quien compartimos charlas, mates o caminatas por algún lugar hermoso. A veces tardo algunos días en acostumbrarme a un nuevo lugar y tener confianza con las personas que me rodean, pero por suerte en Ushuaia pude hacerme algunos amigos enseguida con los que pasé varios días entretenidos 😃.

When I arrived at the hostel where I was going to work for the next 20 days I found quite a few guests staying at the time. This is one of the things I like most about working in accommodation places because it allows you to interact with many travelers from all over the country and the world as well. Particularly in Ushuaia I had the opportunity to meet many foreign people, as this place is an international destination and visitors come from all over the world. This initial movement allowed me to integrate quickly with the guests and learn about the reasons for their trip in this city ❣️.

Cuando llegué al hostel en el que iba a trabajar por los siguientes 20 días me encontré con bastantes huéspedes alojados en ese momento. Esta es una de las cosas que más me gusta de trabajar en lugares de alojamiento porque te permite interactuar con muchos viajeros de todas partes del país y del mundo también. En particular en Ushuaia tuve la oportunidad de conocer a muchas personas extranjeras, ya que este lugar es un destino internacional y a él llegan visitantes de todos lados. Este movimiento inicial me permitió integrarme rápidamente con los huéspedes y conocer acerca de los motivos de su viaje en esta ciudad ❣️.

Most of these guests were in the city of Ushuaia on vacation, others had come to see an important concert and some of them were there because in a few days a race was going to take place. In the hostel there were several athletes who were going to participate in the race, but the one that was most incredible to all of us was a 70 year old man. When he told us that he was going to participate in this challenge, we all congratulated him and wished aloud that he would reach that age with this physical condition 😅.

La mayoría de estos huéspedes estaban en la ciudad de Ushuaia de viaje de vacaciones, otros tantos había llegado para ver un recital importante y algunos de ellos estaban ahí porque en algunos días iba a llevarse a cabo una carrera. En el hostel habían varios deportistas que iban a participar de la carrera, pero el que nos resultó más increíble a todos era un señor de 70 años. Cuando nos contó que iba a participar de este desafío todos lo felicitamos y deseamos en voz alta llegar con este estado físico a esa edad 😅.

The race in Ushuaia was not just any race: it was the southernmost race in the world and it was nothing less than in the mountains. This race had several competition circuits, which included sections of 10, 21, 33 and 50 km in which the trails to the famous Martial Glacier, one of the most touristic points of the city, were crossed. At that time, I had not yet been to the glacier, but I had been told that it was a hike that took about two hours to the base. And these people were going to do it running, even going up further. Some of the guests and I were excited about this gentleman's event as if we had known him before, so we decided to join him in his sporting event. First we went to the event hall where he would be given the distinctive elements of the race, such as T-shirts and merchandising, in addition to checking his medical records and technical elements to carry out the challenge, such as hydration backpack and appropriate footwear. Signing up for this race was not free: it depends on the time of registration, and our friend paid about $25 to participate 😃.

La carrera en Ushuaia no era cualquier carrera: se trataba de la carrera más austral del mundo y era nada más y nada menos que en la montaña. Esta carrera tenía varios circuitos de competencia, que incluían tramos de 10, 21, 33 y 50 km en los que se recorrían los senderos hacía el famoso Glaciar Martial, uno de los puntos más turísticos de la ciudad. Para ese entonces, yo todavía no había ido hasta el glaciar, pero me habían dicho que era una caminata que tomaba unas dos horas hasta la base. Y estas personas la iban a hacer corriendo, incluso subiendo hasta más allá. Algunos de los huéspedes y yo estabamos emocionados por el evento de este señor como si lo conocieramos desde antes, así que decidimos acompañarlo en su evento deportivo. Primero fuimos hasta el salón de eventos en donde le entregarían los elementos distintivos de la carrera, como camisetas y merchandising, además de controlar sus fichas médicas y elementos técnicos para llevar a cabo el desafío, como mochila de hidratación y calzado adecuado. Anotarse en esta carrera no fue gratis: depende el momento de la inscripción era el precio a pagar, y nuestro amigo abonó unos $25 por participar 😃.

When the big day finally arrived, of course we wanted to go and wait for him as a surprise at the finish line. He had told us that it would take him about 5 hours to complete the 21 km he had set out to do, and since the race started at 9 AM, we went to wait for him a little before 2 PM. That day it was quite cold, but we waited and waited anyway because we wanted to see him arrive. The funny thing is that more than an hour passed and we did not see him, so worried, we called the hostel to see if he was there, and indeed he was. It turns out that he had completed the stretch in less time than he had told us and was already comfortable in the hostel while we were freezing in the street 😂.

Cuando finalmente llegó el gran día, por supuesto queríamos ir a esperarlo de sorpresa en la meta. El señor nos había dicho que tardaría unas 5 horas en completar los 21 km que se había propuesto, y como la carrera empezaba a las 9 AM, fuimos a esperarlo desde un rato antes de las 2 PM. Ese día hacía un frío bastante importante, pero igual lo esperamos y esperamos porque queríamos verlo llegar. Lo curioso es que pasó más de una hora y no lo vimos, así que preocupados, llamamos al hostel para ver si el señor se encontraba ahí, y efectivamente fue así. Resulta que había completado el tramo en menos tiempo que el que nos dijo y ya estaba cómodo en el hostel mientras nosotros estábamos pasando frío en la calle 😂.

What we did have time to join him for was the awards ceremony that took place that same day in a hall in the city. According to him, the good thing about competing in these races at his age is that he knows his opponents well because there are not so many of them. He even said that he recognized them from previous events, and that he was very confident that he had passed them in the competition. This was indeed the case, because when it was time for the awards, he was given first place. We were all very happy with the result of the race as if the merit had been ours, and he was happy that we were accompanying him in that special moment 😃.

Para lo que sí estuvimos a tiempo de acompañarlo fue a la entrega de premios que se llevó a cabo ese mismo día en un salón de la ciudad. Según él, lo bueno de competir en estas carreras a su edad es que conoce bien a sus contricantes porque no son tantos. Incluso dijo que los reconoció de eventos anteriores, y que estaba muy seguro de haberlos pasado en la competencia. Esto efectivamente fue así, porque cuando fue el momento de los reconocimientos, le dieron el primer lugar. Todos estábamos muy contentos con el resultado de la carrera como si el mérito hubiese sido nuestro, y él estaba feliz de que lo estuvieramos acompañando en ese momento especial 😃.

One thing we will never know is how much money he earned for that sporting achievement, but it seemed too bold to ask him. What undoubtedly happened is that he inspired us all to keep in good physical shape in order to reach an age like his. In itself, walking in the mountains has its complications, so I can't even imagine running in the mountains. For him, this will have been like a formality because he has been a runner since he was 20 years old, so he will have participated in countless competitions. Having met and accompanied this gentleman was one of the best anecdotes of this trip, and I hope he can continue doing what he likes for a long time to come 😃.

Algo que nunca sabremos es cuánto dinero ganó el por ese logro deportivo, pero nos pareció demasiado atrevido preguntarle. Lo que sin dudas pasó es que nos inspiró a todos a mantener un buen estado físico para poder llegar así a una edad como la suya. De por sí, caminar en la montaña tiene su complicación, así que ni me imagino correr en ella. Para él, esto habrá sido como un trámite porque es corredor desde los 20 años, así que habrá participado en innumerables competiciones. Haber conocido y acompañado a este señor fue una de las mejores anécdotas de este viaje, y espero que él pueda seguir haciendo lo que le gusta durante mucho tiempo más 😃.
