If you’re into water sports, specifically surfing, I assure you that you will be amazed by what I will share with you today.
It’s the time of year when every surfer awaits—not just the surfers but the people in Guiuan as well. This event is very much awaited every year, and it always happens in the month of September, of course, on Calicoan Island, the famous beach in Guiuan Eastern Samar, which is known to be the “Surfing Capital of Visayas”. This event is called the “Calicoan Odyssey Wave 2023,” and it happens every year, but this year is different since it’s the second leg of the NextGen Pilipinas Surfing Nationals 2023, sanctioned by the United Philippine Surfing Association (UPSA).

UPSA is the national sports body for surfing in the Philippines and is recognized by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee as a regular member. This event is organized by the local government unit of Guiuan, UPSA, and the local surfing organizations of Calicoan Island and Eastern Samar and minor sponsors from private company’s in Guiuan.
This event took place from September 15 through September 23, 2023. Surfers from all across the country gathered for this highly anticipated event.
People look forward to the competition as well as the live bands and the Cali Market. Cali Market is quite famous in the neighborhood; there are many different meals to eat and dine with. Based on my observation, more people are present at night than in the morning. There are also merchants selling anklets, necklaces, and stickers, as well as permanent tattoos and henna tattoos. We received anklets and I got a henna tattoo from Twengstyle Pilipinas. I spent PHP150 for a typical size henna tats; his rates vary depending on the style and size desired. Tweng is a tattoo artist; I'm not sure where he's from, but he's talented and you can look for him on facebook by searching Twengstyle Pilipinas.
Such gatherings are a lot of fun. You can unwind and take in the night with your loved ones at this time. Families can be seen having dinner in Calicoan; they simply took their home-cooked meals and ate them there. Numerous surfers from various locations will be visible, including the well-known Philmar Alipayo of Siargao, who was present with his crew and famous wife Andi Eigenmann. She even published a picture of her trip to Guiuan on Instagram.

On the last day of the event, everyone was also waiting for the invited band, which is Green Peace and Franco. We weren’t able to witness the last day of the event since we had work the next day and the rain was pouring hard.
You won't regret going here if you enjoy surfing. In addition to visiting our location's well-known tourist attractions, surfers and even tourists from other parts of the nation are drawn to it by its extensive history. Events like this can significantly increase tourism and support local businesses who sell Guiuan specialties and other goods.
