A VOLUNTEER DAY CLEANING THE BEACH IN LISBON PORTUGAL 🌱♻️(ENG-ESP)

Today I want to share with you about my experience as a volunteer cleaning the Cruz Quebrada beach, located in Lisbon, Portugal. It is usually a point where every month the environmental organization calls for volunteers to treat this beach that, not being a high point of tourism, usually accumulates a lot of garbage and other polluting materials. Not only did we clean up, but we also received information about the environmental impact we are presenting and the recycling process.

Hoy quiero contarles mi experiencia siendo voluntaria limpiando la playa Cruz Quebrada, localizada en Lisboa, Portugal. Suele ser un punto donde cada cierto mes la organización ambiental convoca voluntarios para tratar esa playa que, al no ser un punto alto de turismo, suele acumularse mucha basura y otros materiales contaminantes. No solo se realizó limpiezas, también recibimos información del impacto ambiental que estamos presentando y el proceso de reciclaje.

At the beginning of the event, we received the orientation talk explaining the importance of recycling and the care we have to give to the planet. There are 8 garbage islands registered at the moment. Much of the garbage we find on the shore of the beach is due to poor recycling and individuals who place objects that are not biodegradable in the toilet. We also received some gloves to pick up the objects, so we protected ourselves. In case of dealing with glass, we do not have the danger of getting hurt. Bags where we will place the garbage, also a nice cap and drinks to keep us hydrated.

Al inicio del evento, recibimos la charla de orientación explicándonos lo importante del reciclaje y el cuidado que le tenemos que dar el planeta. Existen 8 islas de basura registradas por los momentos. Mucho de la basura que encontramos en la orilla de la playa es por el mal reciclaje e individuos que colocan objetos que no son biodegradables en el sanitario. También recibimos unos guantes para recoger los objetos, con eso nos protegimos. En caso de tratar con vidrio, no tengamos el peligro de herirnos. Bolsas donde colocaremos la basura, también una linda gorra y bebidas para mantenernos hidratados.

We organized ourselves into different types of garbage, I had the organic and undifferentiated garbage, my partner was in charge of plastics and packaging. One of the biggest pollutants on the beach was baby wipes. Swabs, construction material, beach shoes and lots of plastic like bottles, candy sticks. Caps etc. We were also surprised to see batteries, it is a very toxic and dangerous material for the planet, we located a collection center for that material. One of the ways to know where you can leave the objects is by their colors, yellow containers are for plastic and packaging, blue for paper and cardboard, green for glass and black for organic and undifferentiated materials. That day I used the black container because I was in charge of this type of garbage. I also learned that this garbage that we collected goes to some factories where they recycle it, for example, plastic bottles and caps, etc. There is a machine that transforms the material into plastic pellets that are used in new bottles or other plastic materials. They also taught us that paper is a biodegradable material so if we find a wet paper or in a bad condition, unfortunately it will not make it through the recycling process because it will surely be thrown away.

Nos organizamos en diferentes tipos de basura, yo tenía la de los orgánicos e indiferenciados, mi pareja era el encargado de los plásticos y embalajes. Uno de los mayores objetos contaminante que estaban en la playa era las toallitas para bebe. Hisopos, material de construcción, zapatos de playa y mucho plástico como botellas, palitos de dulce. Tapas etc. También nos sorprendió ver baterías, es un material muy tóxico y peligroso para el planeta, localizamos un centro de recogida para ese material. Una de las maneras de saber donde puedes dejar los objetos es por sus colores, contenedores amarillos es para plástico y embalajes, el azul para papel y cartón, verde para el vidrio y el negro para materiales orgánicos e indiferenciado. Ese día utilicé el contenedor negro porque era la encargada de este tipo de basuras. También aprendí que esta basura que recogimos van algunas fábricas donde realizan su reciclaje por ejemplo de botellas de plástico y tapas etc. Existe una máquina que transforma el material en bolitas de plástico que se utilizan en nuevas botellas u otros materiales de plástico. También nos enseñaron que el papel es un material biodegradable por lo cual si encontramos un papel mojado o en un mal estado, lastimosamente no logrará pasar el proceso de reciclaje porque seguramente se irá a deshacer.

I feel very happy together with my partner to have the opportunity to participate in this activity because it is not only a learning experience that we get even if it is a cleanup on a small beach, marine and terrestrial animals also appreciate it because we are not the only ones living on this planet. Also by doing a good deed we feel good about ourselves. This activity helped me to orient myself in recycling, I used to think that any object that is plastic can go to the yellow container, but in reality it is not so, the cans we can put them, the small plastic lids in very bad condition go to the container of undifferentiated, if we find construction concrete we can also leave it in that container.

Me siento muy feliz junto con mi pareja lograr tener la oportunidad de participar en esta actividad porque no solo es un aprendizaje que logramos obtener aunque sea una limpieza en una pequeña playa, animales marinos y terrestres también lo agradecen porque no somos los únicos viviendo en este planeta. También al hacer una buena obra nos sentimos bien con nosotros mismos. Esta actividad me ayudo a orientarme en el reciclaje, yo antes pensaba que cualquier objeto que sea plástico puede ir al contenedor amarillo, pero en realidad no es así, las latas podemos colocarlas, las tapas pequeñas de plástico en muy mal estado van al contenedor de indiferenciados, si encontramos concreto de construcción lo podemos dejar también en ese contenedor.
