I have heard that before, or Indian, but funnily enough I haven't really been exposed to any Middle Eastern music other than the indirect influence on Western African music, particularly Desert Blues from Northern Mali.
I'm guessing it's the droney open strings I play on maybe half my songs, a habit which I picked up playing my Chinese friends Dombra and trying to get an interesting sound with 2 strings and 0 training. And China+Dombra is a good example of the environment I started jamming in, Chinese modern folk/rock with lots of Tibetan, Mongolian and Eastern European folk influence.
