HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO SOMETHING DOES NOT MEAN YOU SHOULD DO IT : Exploiting the Less Privileged ; one thing I can never do.

I see people easily take advantage of those that have no one to speak for them, I see people exploiting the less privileged, the poor, instead of assisting them, they take undue advantage of their condition, and I often wonder if they really know the consequences of what they are doing.

I remember a place I was working back then, I was assigned the task of collecting some money from people in order to gather examination materials for the students there. At a point, most of my colleagues said to me, “Nsi, you are in charge now, we need our own share of whatever you make.” I kept laughing. After everything was over and I delivered, I called them and asked, “How much do you think I made from that assignment I was given?” They all mentioned different amounts. I smiled and told them that I had the opportunity of making such amounts, then covering it up without anyone knowing, but I chose not to do so. I explained that I preferred making my own money in a legitimate way. I reminded them that they all know I advocate for better education and always try in my little way to support students wherever I see them, so it would never be wise for me to steal, cheat, or take from the very people I am constantly advocating for. Just because I had the opportunity to do so does not mean I should do it.

They were all shocked and asked me, “So you didn’t take any cash from what was given to you?” I told them I never took a kobo, and even the leftover money I returned in full to my boss. Although she never appreciated the gesture, my mind and conscience were at peace. I do not know if they believed me, but I told them the truth.

One thing I can never do, and I pray no situation should ever push me to try it, is exploiting the less privileged or stealing from the poor to enrich myself.

Having the opportunity to do something wrong does not mean I should do it.
