El edificio de la Capitanía General de la Armada se encuentra en San Fernando, Cádiz, en el sur de España. El edificio actual fue reedificado a principio del siglo XX.
The Capitanía General de la Armada building is located in San Fernando, Cádiz, in southern Spain. The present building was rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century.
Cuando San Fernando y Cádiz eran las dos únicas ciudades que le quedaba a Napoleón por conquistar de todo el territorio español a principios del siglo XIX, la Capitanía General de la Armada se trasladó a la ciudad de Cádiz donde era más difícil que llegase a ser bombardeada por ser prácticamente una isla y además bien fortificada.
When San Fernando and Cádiz were the only two cities left for Napoleon to conquer in Spain at the beginning of the 19th century, the Captaincy General of the Navy moved to the city of Cádiz where it was more difficult for it to be bombarded as it was practically an island and well fortified.
Posteriormente, se trasladó a San Fernando a su lugar de origen, la calle Real, donde permanece el edificio.
Subsequently, it was moved to San Fernando to its original site, Calle Real, where the building remains.
San Fernando es una pequeña ciudad de Cádiz, pero llegó a tener mucha importancia y se nota al pasear por sus calles. Su ayuntamiento es el más grande de Andalucía y a cada paso encontramos palacetes militares como el que os muestro.
San Fernando is a small town in Cádiz, but it became very important and you can see it when you walk through its streets. Its town hall is the largest in Andalusia and at every step we find military palaces like the one I show you.
Después la Capitanía General se trasladó a la escuela de suboficiales en la misma ciudad y el palacete queda como Museo. Una parte es el Museo Naval y la otra, la que os muestro, solamente es visitable bajo la supervisión del personal del centro.
Later the General Captaincy was moved to the NCO school in the same city and the palace remains as a museum. One part is the Naval Museum and the other, which I show you, can only be visited under the supervision of the staff of the centre.
Al entrar lo primero que nos encontramos es el Patio de Cristales, donde se encuentran retratos de antiguos capitanes generales. El patio está cubierto por una cristalera que le da amplitud y una buena iluminación.
On entering, the first thing you come across is the Patio de Cristales, where you will find portraits of former captains general. The courtyard is covered by a glass roof, which gives it a spacious and well-lit space.
El suelo es de losas de mármol y el mobiliario se basa en algunas sillas y mesas de artesanía local.
The floor is made of marble slabs and the furniture is based on some chairs and tables of local craftsmanship.
El recorrido nos lleva a La Escalera Real hecha de madera de acceso a la planta superior iluminada por una lucerna en el techo. La planta superior el acceso está prohibido.
The route takes us to the Royal Staircase made of wood that leads to the upper floor, which is illuminated by a skylight in the ceiling. Access to the upper floor is forbidden.
Junto a la escalera sigue la misma decoración de muebles artesanales de madera y piel. Encima las placas con los nombres de todos los Capitanes Generales y algunos grabados de grandes batallas navales.
Next to the staircase is the same decoration of handcrafted wooden and leather furniture. Above the staircase are plaques with the names of all the Captains General and some engravings of great naval battles.
La visita nos lleva a otra sala, El Salón de Tresillos.
Como lector de novelas da Patrick O´Brian, Pérez Reverte o Alexander Kent, imagino el salón lleno de capitanes de navíos esperando las órdenes para zarpar.
The visit takes us to another room, the Salon de Tresillos.
As a reader of novels by Patrick O'Brian, Pérez Reverte or Alexander Kent, I imagine the hall full of captains of ships waiting for orders to set sail.
En el salón vemos retratos de grandes marinos como es Álvaro de Bazán que luchó en la batalla de Lepanto entre otras.
In the hall we see portraits of great seafarers such as Álvaro de Bazán who fought in the battle of Lepanto among others.
Desde el salón se accede al Comedor de Gala. La impresionante mesa para cincuenta comensales con el gran espejo en el extremo que crea una sensación de mayor amplitud, hacen del comedor lo mejor de la visita.
From the lounge you enter the Gala Dining Room. The impressive table for fifty diners with the large mirror at the end that creates a feeling of greater amplitude, make the dining room the highlight of the visit.
En vitrinas se guardan parte de la vajilla de porcelana para las grandes cenas de gala. Además, hay unas mesas auxiliares con cerámicas pintadas con motivos navales.
Glass cabinets hold some of the porcelain tableware for the grand gala dinners. In addition, there are side tables with ceramics painted with naval motifs.
No puedo evitar imaginar mientras observo la impresionante mesa, al Vicealmirante Villenueve y al teniente General Gravina con todos los capitanes de la escuadra tratando los últimos detalles mientras cenan justo la noche antes de la que iba a ser la Batalla de trafalgar contra los ingleses.
As I look at the impressive table, I can't help imagining Vice-Admiral Villenueve and Lieutenant General Gravina with all the captains of the squadron trying out the last details while they dine just the night before what was to be the Battle of Trafalgar against the English.
La visita termina con dos últimas estancias. Una salita y el Salón del Trono.
The visit ends with two final rooms. A small room and the Throne Room.
La salita llamada Salón del Piano, decorada con un retrato del Rey Carlos III de España, un piano de pared junto a una bonita lámpara igual que el mobiliario que encontramos.
The small room called the Piano Room, decorated with a portrait of King Carlos III of Spain, a wall piano and a beautiful lamp, as well as the furniture.
El Salón del Trono decorado con dos grandes espejos a los extremos, alfombras de la Real Fábrica de Tapices, dos enormes lámparas y la fotografía del Rey Felipe II con vestido con el uniforme de capitán general de la Armada.
The Throne Room is decorated with two large mirrors at either end, carpets from the Royal Tapestry Factory, two enormous chandeliers and a photograph of King Philip II dressed in the uniform of Captain General of the Navy.
