Architecture is so special that it can define the essence of towns and cities, tell their story, about their evolution and their people. Just by looking at their buildings we can infer many things and see how construction has developed over time and Santa Cruz de Mora, is a proof of this.
On my past trip to the Mocotíes Valley of the State of Mérida, Venezuela, I had the opportunity to visit Santa Cruz de Mora, enjoy its streets and admire all those houses that frame it and that distinguish this town from any other in the State.
Santa Cruz is a small town, also known as the land of coffee. Its architecture had a marked Italian influence, since in colonial times many Italian families migrated and settled in this locality. That is why, we always find some residents with Italian surnames, the most popular of them Paparoni. How do I know all this?, Well, I have a lot of family here and I have spent a good part of my life in this beautiful place.
Today I invite you to take a small tour of the Central Casco of Santa Cruz de Mora, starting with its Plaza Bolívar.
La arquitectura es tan especial que puede definir la esencia de pueblos y ciudades, contar su historia, acerca de su evolución y su gente. Con tan solo ver sus edificaciones podemos inferir muchas cosas, ver como la construcción se ha desarrollado con el tiempo y Santa Cruz de Mora, es una prueba de ello.
En mi pasado viaje al Valle del Mocotíes del Estado Mérida, Venezuela, tuve la oportunidad de visitar Santa Cruz de Mora, disfrutar de sus calles y admirar todas esas casas que la enmarcan y que distinguen a este pueblo de cualquier otro del Estado.
Santa Cruz es un pequeño pueblo, conocido también como la tierra de café. Su arquitectura tuvo una marcada influencia italiana, ya que en la época colonial muchas familias italianas migraron y se asentaron en esta localidad. Es por eso, que siempre nos encontramos con algunos pobladores con apellidos de origen italiano, el más popular de ellos Paparoni. ¿Como sé todo esto?, Bueno, tengo mucha familia aquí y he pasado una buena parte de mi vida en este bonito lugar.
Hoy los invito a dar un pequeño recorrido por el Casco Central de Santa Cruz de Mora, comenzando por su Plaza Bolívar.

One of the main features of this town is its topography, wow its streets are quite steep and the square is no exception. This square is very beautiful and has undergone some changes over time, the main one being its sculpture. Now we find the statue in Honor of Liberator Simón Bolívar standing, on a beautiful marble pedestal.
Una de las principales características de este pueblo, es su topografía, wow sus calles son bastante empinadas y la plaza no es la excepción. Esta plaza es muy bonita y ha sufrido algunos cambios con el tiempo, el principal de ellos es su escultura. Ahora encontramos la estatua en Honor al Libertador Simón Bolívar de pie, sobre un bello pedestal en mármol.
In the central area we find a granite octagon and from each side the different concrete walkways decorated with diamonds, separated by a green and beautiful grass. We also find some palms and beautiful trees, which fill the square with green and life. Around the square we have different stairs, which allows us to access it.
En el área central encontramos un octágono en granito y desde cada lado se derivan las distintas caminerías en concreto decorado con rombos, separadas por una verde y bella grama. También encontramos algunas palmas y bellos árboles, que llenan de verde y de vida la plaza. Alrededor de la plaza tenemos distintas escaleras, que nos permite acceder a ella.

Around Bolívar Square, we find various buildings of architectural interest, in the background we see the Church of Our Lady of Carmen and on the right side we find the Municipal Government Building. A contemporary four-story building and a basement, whose colors stand out from a distance, despite its simple and traditional architecture, but what stands out most around the square are these beautiful colonial houses.
Alrededor de la plaza Bolívar, encontramos diversas edificaciones de interés arquitectónico, al fondo vemos la Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen y del lado derecho encontramos el Edificio Municipal de Gobierno. Un edificio contemporáneo de cuatro plantas y un sótano, cuyos colores llaman la atención desde lejos, a pesar de su arquitectura sencilla y tradicional, pero lo que más destaca alrededor de la plaza, son estas bellas casas coloniales.
Beautiful and old houses, occupying half a block, enhance the architectural environment of the town. Most of them are currently businesses, but I can imagine that in colonial times they belonged to wealthy and important people.
It is incredible how these houses are preserved, some have been recently restored like this beautiful house, which is now a small shopping center. Others are a little deteriorated, the coating lets you see the earth of their walls, since these houses are made of adobe or mud with a rustic wooden structure.
One of the things I love about this style of housing are its balconies and of course its roof covered with typical Andean tiles. A very characteristic material of the Andean lands.
Hermosas y antiguas casonas, que ocupan media manzana, realzan el entorno arquitectónico del pueblo. La mayoría de ellas, actualmente son comercios, pero puedo imaginar que en la época colonial, pertenecían a gente adinerada e importante.
Es increíble como se conservan estas viviendas, algunas han sido recientemente restauradas como esta bella casona, que ahora es un pequeño centro comercial. Otras se notan un poco deterioradas, el revestimiento deja ver la tierra de sus paredes, ya que estas casas son de tapia o de barro con una estructura rústica en madera.
Una de las cosas que me encantan de este estilo de viviendas, son sus balcones y por supuesto su cubierta de techo en tejas criollas. Un material muy característico de las tierras andinas.
This beautiful colonial house is one of my favorites, I like how long and extensive it is, its windows that look like doors, made of wood, with a wooden grille and some leaves that can be partially opened. Its entrance in the form of an arch, with decorative columns, simple, but that enhance the facade and its double-pitched roof. Currently, this house houses a library and a school of crafts and arts.
Esta bella casona colonial es una de mis favoritas, me gusta lo alargada y extensa que es, sus ventanas que parecen puertas, de madera, con un enrejado de madera y algunas hojas que se pueden abrir parcialmente. Su entrada en forma de arco, con columnas decorativas, sencillas, pero que realzan la fachada y su cubierta a dos aguas. Actualmente, en esta casona se encuentra una biblioteca y una escuela de labores y artes.
In the middle of these beautiful colonial houses, we find some common houses in the Andean villages, cozy houses, with large corridors, windows and wooden doors, where clay is always present, usually in the roof covers, accompanied by a more contemporary architecture, where clay and earth are replaced by concrete.
En medio de estas bellas casas coloniales, encontramos algunas viviendas comunes en los pueblos andinos, viviendas acogedoras, de grandes pasillos, ventanales y puertas de madera, donde la arcilla siempre está presente, generalmente en las cubiertas de techo, acompañadas de una arquitectura más contemporánea, donde se sustituye el barro y la tierra por el concreto.
Without a doubt, this town conveys a calm and wonderful peace, its people are friendly and its architecture has great historical value, which I hope will be preserved for a long time. Coming back to Santa Cruz will always make me happy.
Sin duda, este pueblo transmite una calma y una paz maravillosa, su gente es amable y su arquitectura tiene un gran valor histórico, que espero se siga conservando por mucho tiempo. Volver a Santa Cruz siempre me hará feliz.

I have discovered many beautiful things walking with you through this post, like one of the many Bolivar squares that I still don't know and the fact that even though there are houses that don't have the colonial style, they still look great in contrast, everything in your area looks cozy, no wonder it is one of the favourite states for tourism in Venezuela...

It is fortunate to see the houses and buildings of the colonial period with the same ancient character even now. Renovation of houses but retaining the original character adds more value. The blue color seen on the walls of these old houses fascinates me. This is indeed a beautiful architectural tour.

Hi @doriangel you brought a town that has my last name to hive, Santa Cruz as a last name comes from Europe especially Spain, if it is called that way it must have a lot of colonial history as seen in your architecture.
It is a town with a lot of elevation as seen in the pictures and a typical cold mountain climate.
