hive friends, how is your week going? I hope very well today I wanted to show you a historical place of my city Naguanagua, called the church of Our Lady of Begoña and next to it also tell you a little of the Bolivar square.

A few days ago I passed in front of this church since I just have to pass by there to go to my volleyball practice, and I thought I would take the time to stop for a moment and take pictures of this magnificent structure.

This church is considered a National Historic Monument and is the official site for the veneration of Our Lady of Begoña, where today there are many followers who pay homage to her.

Before the church we know today was built, there was only the so-called colonial chapel. This chapel was built at the request of the people of the valley of Naguanagua, Bernardino Lopez and Dionisio Matute, who asked the ecclesiastical government, at that time the bishop of Caracas, Mariano Marti, the creation of the same. It was thus signed on May 14, 1782. On January 21, 1783, the site was marked for the reconstruction of the church, which was paid for by the neighbors. In 1788 the building was finished and served the town until 1936.

On August 2, 1960, according to the Official Gazette, it was declared a National Historic Monument.

In 1936 the construction of the present church began, being built right next to the chapel, leaving it as an auxiliary. This sanctuary was built following the neoclassical, colonial style.

It was made in front of what is now Plaza Bolivar, which was created from the construction of the colonial chapel. This square was a meeting place in the old society but this tradition was lost when there began to be many stores around the square.

The highlight of this square is the statue of the country's Liberator Simon Bolivar that stands in the middle of it. This statue was created for an anniversary of the municipality, and the artist who made it wanted to make us see the Liberator of the country as the hero and father of the country that he is but also wanted us to see him as a common man. For this he made the statue with the real dimensions of Bolivar, dressed in civilian clothes and also that it was not inaccessible to visitors to the square. That is why the statue measures 1.72 meters, which was Bolivar's height, is dressed in civilian clothes and is resting on a balcony completely open to the people, so that people go up, take pictures and admire the Liberator.

Greetings dear Julia! Very good article. This church has always been the focus of visit of all the inhabitants of Naguanagua. All my family, neighbors and some local friends, have made their communions, weddings, baptisms and so on. The facade and the structure itself is simple and I love that a few years ago they changed the stained glass windows. A hug Julia.

Yes, this church is simply wonderful and very visited by all. It's good that you liked the post.

I'd probably assume, based on your post's images. that the built spaces you've highlighted here are not that large right? Yet, despite the small footprint of that environment, that significant site is packed with history, exhibiting its political and religious heritage with the presence of the statue of your country's esteemed hero Simon Bolivar and the church and chapel beside each other. Did you get the chance to capture interior photos of the La Begoña Church?

Hello @erixprd, a warm welcome to the Architecture+Design Community. 😊
