Hello everyone and happy start to the week! It's been a while since I've been in this wonderful community that highlights architecture and design on Hive. Today I'm here to share a bit about the beauty and modernity of a popular recording studio in downtown Caracas, where I've been working for the past two weeks on a Christmas choral piece for an American artist's album. There's not only magic in recording and being part of a project like this remotely, but also in doing it in such an ideal and inspiring place as Velvet Studio.
¡Hola a todos y feliz inicio de semana!. Tenía un tiempo sin pasar por esta hermosa comunidad que destaca la arquitectura y el diseño en Hive. Hoy estoy aquí con el motivo de compartirles un poco de la belleza y la modernidad de un popular estudio de grabación en el centro de Caracas, donde he estado trabajando las últimas dos semanas para una intervención coral navideña en el álbum de una artista norteamericana. No solo hay magia en grabar y ser parte de un proyecto como este a distancia, sino también que lo hacemos en un lugar optimo e inspirador como el Estudio Velvet.
The place doesn't have a grand facade; in fact, it's an ordinary, everyday building located on the corner of Barcenas and Rio streets, in the Miranda Passage of Quinta Crespo, very close to Radio Caracas Televisión. I think it's thanks to its proximity to that station that this place is recognized by many musicians here in Caracas, since renowned artists like Felipe Pirela, Lila Morillo, and Mirla Castellanos have recorded here. This place has been around since the 1950s, and I myself first visited it during the quarantine when we recorded that special song for the man who is now Saint José Gregorio Hernández.
El lugar no tiene una gran fachada, de hecho es un edificio común, normal y corriente, ubicado en la Esquina Barcenas a Rio, en el Pasaje Miranda de Quinta Crespo, muy cerca de Radio Caracas Televisión, y creo que gracias a la cercanía con ese medio, este lugar es reconocido por muchos músicos aquí en Caracas, ya que aquí han grabado artistas de gran renombre como Felipe Pirela, Lila Morillo y Mirla Castellanos. Este lugar existe desde la década de los 50, y yo mismo lo conocí en plena cuarentena cuando grabamos aquella canción especial para quien hoy es San José Gregorio Hernández.
What stands out most in the studio is the art. Various paintings, artwork, and records are scattered throughout the space, including Christmas decorations that are part of the season. Once inside, the floor is covered in rugs and numerous pop culture references. The lighting is dim throughout the studio, and the colors are primarily earth tones, contrasted by the colorful artwork. There's the large studio area, big enough for at least a 16-person choir like ours, but there's also the mixing console room, the editing room, the office, the reception area, and even a kitchen where there's always delicious coffee.
Lo que más resalta en el estudio es el arte. Diversos cuadros, pinturas y discos se encuentran esparcido por todo el lugar, incluso la decoración navideña que es parte de esta temporada. Una vez que entras, el suelo tiene alfombras por doquier y muchos detalles de la cultura pop. Las luces son tenues en todo el piso y los colores principalmente tierra, con el contraste de los coloridos cuadros. Está la zona del estudio grande donde entra al menos un coro de 16 personas como nosotros, pero también está el cuarto de las consolas, el cuarto de edición, la oficina, la recepción y hasta una cocina donde siempre hay un delicioso café.
The heart of the entire space is the recording studio. Spacious enough to accommodate even a small orchestra, with microphones positioned throughout the room. The floor is ceramic tile, but wood-colored, as the entire room features wood paneling on the ceiling and walls to enhance the acoustics. Facing the musicians is a huge window separating us from the technicians, and on the other side of the glass, state-of-the-art equipment. We were even connected live with our representatives in Los Angeles, who were monitoring and directing our singing from there—everything was very modern. A modern, fresh, and special place to focus entirely on the music and allow the work to flow smoothly and efficiently.
El corazón de toda la arquitectura del lugar es la sala de grabación. Suficientemente espaciosa como para recibir incluso una pequeña orquesta y poder esparcir la microfonía en toda la zona. El suelo es de cerámicas, pero de color madera, ya que toda la habitación tiene madera en el techo y paredes para ayudar a la acústica. Frente a los músicos, una enorme ventana que nos separa de los técnicos, y del otro lado del vidrio los equipos más modernos, incluso estábamos en vivo con los representantes en Los Ángeles que seguía y daba directrices a nuestro canto desde allá, todo muy moderno. Un lugar moderno, fresco y especial para concentrarse netamente en la música y que el trabajo fluya bien y rápido.
At the end of the recording sessions, I discovered a piano behind a Christmas tree in what appears to be a small storage room just behind the recording area. After all, it's the only musical instrument that can't be moved around easily for fear of damage or going out of tune. Another thing I loved about this place is that the true bosses of the entire studio are five beautiful cats who rule the roost. In the end, I only managed to get a picture of four of them together; there was always one rebel, but I want to end this post with this image. Al final de las jornadas de grabación fue que descubrí un piano detrás de un árbol de navidad en lo que parece ser una pequeña habitación para guardar cosas justo detrás de la zona de grabación. Después de todo, es el único instrumento musical que no se puede mover tan fácil para que no se deteriore o se desafine. Otra cosa que amé de este lugar es que los verdaderos jefes de todo el estudio son cinco hermosos gatos que dominan el lugar. Al final solo pude tomar una foto a cuatro de ellos reunidos, siempre hubo un rebelde, pero con esta imagen quiero concluir esta publicación. Wow, what a beautiful studio. It is known as a good place to sing. It looks very nice. There are also various types of DVD players.
